my brother's '96 honda accord didn't last long :(

apparantly some time around august a crack developed in the crankshaft or something like that (i dont know cars that well), and started leaking oil.. my brother, being the idiot that he is, ignores the oil light that comes on for like.. a month. I come up to see him at college, demand he fill it, he does, the oil light comes back on in a week. He ignores it again. As he is driving home for a weekend visit around late october, his engine siezes up in the middle of nowhere. I have to drive 4 hours there and back to pick him and his friend up. 2 months and $5,000 later, the engine is re-built and running good. The car itself is only worth ~$5,000, my brother should have scrapped it and bought another car for the same amount

4 - The clutch is worn
5 - The synchros are worn out...

....and I've probably driven 30,000k miles with it like this...probably closer to 90 since it started burning oil. :p

The ride is bumpy and noisy as hell, but she always performs admirably...hopefully I will be able to replace the axle and change the oil this weekend.:D

Damn. Everybody that needs a damned F22 is always on the other side of the country:| If you were closer I'd give you the engine out of my 91. Hell, it even has a new OEM clutch.

Hmmm I live in LA too.. :)
So what engine do you have?

Correction. Your brother could have bought a used motor for less then $500 and been fine:)

Same as my sis' 96' camry. The radiator fluid leaked out or something, don't remember the details. The engine died completely. Costed $1500 for an engine swap. Guess she got off easy.

how many miles on it? my '91 F22 has been through some rough times. i've told the story of driving it 70 MPH on two cylinders with the other two open to the air a few times, so i won't bore people with it again. leaks a little oil since then, but otherwise it's been solid for the 50,000 miles since then. i wish it was a stick, though.

I thought if the car is labled "totaled" your given the amount it was worth and your not allowed to make any more claims on it right? How could you get a second claim? Did you not get the insurance money after the second accident?

I will post a video of my Crown Victoria tonight that has had nearly zero oil pressure for three months, knocks so amazingly loud it puts the most aggressive diesel to shame, and is driven every day up to 100 miles a day. Damn thing refuses to die.

why don't ya put oil in it? :p

Could be a bad pump.

Yup...bad oil pump. Oil is full. I'm waiting for it to die and it just wont.

Impressive, but I hate frickin all interference engines...once the timing belt goes, your pistons slam into your valves, then major $$$.
Definitely change your timing belts at the manufacturer's recommended interval

Mythbusters did something similar to this with an old Cadillac engine. They poured sugar, water, coca cola and I can't remember what else and that engine kept going. If I recall correctly, I think the engine finally gave out when they added mothballs into the oil tank. Funny stuff.

They never successfully killed it. It revv'd up high with the mothballs, though. In fact, that's the only thing that caused any change whatsoever.

Actually, that episode was on last night. They DID finally kill it by pouring bleach in the crank case.

It seized up after a little while when they did that.

The Mothballs actually made it run better. :D

I put up a mirror on my web server. However, I have a 3GB bandwidth limit, so please don't repost the link elsewhere. Thanks.

Did anyone else notice the different front wheels used throughout the video?

They started out as a yellow solid rim, then to a steel wheel with holes toward the outer diameter, then to factory looking aluminum wheels.
