July's not over, between me and my wife, we've spent about $1000 this month on gasoline. (5% cash back, woot!) More than half of that was simply for enjoyment types of activities. In the winter, to heat my house, I exclusively use coal. My house's insulation in the attic is about R-8. My lawn mower is from 1969; long before any fuel efficiency/emission type things came about. Ditto my tractor. And, I mow a fairly large chunk of lawn. I love the plastic grocery store bags, they're great for putting garbage in each day & taking it out daily, instead of filling up a larger bag and only taking the garbage out once a week.
I do, however, like to minimize trips to the city to pick up stuff; it's 25 minutes each way, so that's more of a time saver than for the sake of saving energy. I'm kicking myself for forgetting PVC cement when I drove in this morning - had to replace a valve on the hot tub that I'm setting up for my wife (I'm not a hot tub kind of person). She's planning on keeping it going year round, including Jan and Feb when the temperature is single digits; I'm pretty sure that's not very green either. We have two window air conditioners; we do attempt to save a bit here - a floor fan blows the cold air from the office toward our bedroom during the evening; and the opposite direction toward our living room during the day. The second is in the sun room - bought it for the purpose of keeping the dogs cool when it gets hot; it keeps the kitchen cool as well. Wife has both of those set the mid 60's most of the time. The garden hose is on 24/7/365 days of the year. There's a leak at the dog's bowl, so the water is always fresh. Ditto for one of the goats' waterers. Saves me from cleaning those bowls as often. We frequently have bonfires in the back yard; plenty of smoke from that.
But, I do recycle cans, bottles, and plastic containers. So, it probably averages out.
