This benchmark simulates user actions for adding, completing, and removing to-do items using multiple examples in TodoMVC. Each example in TodoMVC implements the same todo application using DOM APIs in different ways. Some call DOM APIs directly from ECMAScript 5 (ES5), ECMASCript 2015 (ES6), ES6 transpiled to ES5, and Elm transpiled to ES5. Others use one of eleven popular JavaScript frameworks: React, React with Redux, Ember.js, Backbone.js, AngularJS, (new) Angular, Vue.js, jQuery, Preact, Inferno, and Flight. Many of these frameworks are used on the most popular websites in the world, such as Facebook and Twitter. The performance of these types of operations depends on the speed of the DOM APIs, the JavaScript engine, CSS style resolution, layout, and other technologies.

Since the thread title is "How fast is your browser?" I thought it would be interesting to bring in some other browser benchmarks, since Speedometer was developed by a team headed by WebKit (read: Apple), Octane - Google, and Kraken - Mozilla.

The results are all over the place. I had chalked it up to Octane v2 being retired in 2017, and Kraken being like 10 years old, while Speedometer 2.0 was updated in 2018. Though WebXPRT is maintained actively.

Regarding disparity in the above results, I think it was interesting reading through what each test actually benchmarks.

I thought it was also really interesting reading Andrei's impression of the A14 in the iPhone 12 review, basically noting that while the Speedometer scores and JetStream (also a WebKit-produced benchmark) were 25-30% faster than the A13 in the iPhone 11, he says, "I would be lying if I were to say that I noticed that the new iPhone 12s are any faster than the iPhone 11 in everyday usage, but that’s simply because these are already are outstandingly fast devices." Which seems odd. 25-30% speed increases should be noticeable, but he notes as well, "The new iPhone 12s here actually show very little progress in terms of performance. This small progress in WebXPRT is actually quite representative of my overall impression of responsiveness of the new iPhones."

So perhaps we should be using WebXPRT 3 to gauge the overall browsing experience?

I upgraded my system yesterday with goodies I bought at Micro Center. The old stuff is in sig still. I went from i7-4790K to i9-10850K. Can't really feel a difference, but benchmarks are amazing.

First test was with Firefox, then Edge.

Hmm some diverging results in this thread, not sure if I can make sense of the 5600 vs 5900 vs 5950 results...

Hmm some diverging results in this thread, not sure if I can make sense of the 5600 vs 5900 vs 5950 results...

Exact browser version, ram/fclk speed, ram timings, background tasks, and browser plugins all seem to affect the score.

I was only seeing ~165 until I turned off Ublock.

Aha, I run with lots of privacy addons including ublock... I initially assumed I was fine just since CPU/GPU usage was low when I started the benchmark.

Forgot that Opera has its own blocker for ads and tracking active, rerun with that disabled:
N3700 - Opera 75.0.3969: 16.54 ±0.15 (25% improvement 😳)
4500U - Opera 75.0.3969: 94.46 ±0.83

Cool, finally someone without big numbers from high wattage machines :) Then i dare to throw in my Surface Pro X numbers:
