just watched Airplane (1980) in its entirety recently.
the amount of what is now considered un-PC content would offend so many people, it would never have made it to the box office today.

for those alive when it aired, was it controversial?

I wouldn't agree at all. Aside from doing it poorly, any Wayans movie or spoof movie makes essentially the same sort of stereotype jokes that Airplane! did.

I think this is more nostalgia than anything.

The only thing you can't be in Hollywood is anti-semitic. Mel Gibson lost his role in Hangover because of that. Anything else is fair game and niche/risque comedies are still produced.

I thought Robert Downey Jr was brilliant in that role. That movie is hilarious in the beginning and middle but just gets ridiculous at the end. Great concept, mediocre implementation.
