how far we've regressed as a nation/society

just watched Airplane (1980) in its entirety recently.
the amount of what is now considered un-PC content would offend so many people, it would never have made it to the box office today.

for those alive when it aired, was it controversial?

That movie is amazing. I re-watched it not that long ago and it still holds up.

I don't recall it being particularly controversial.

I think that's the OP's point - If they did the exact same movie today, we'd never hear the end of the tidal wave of Butt hurt.

i watched 3 ninjas 2 weekends ago with my nephews, and in the movie the kids are calling eachother retards.

that is almost a bannable offense on these boards now a days lol.

I think this is more nostalgia than anything.

The only thing you can't be in Hollywood is anti-semitic. Mel Gibson lost his role in Hangover because of that. Anything else is fair game and niche/risque comedies are still produced.

It's balanced out by the amount of completely over the top "shock for the sake of shock" faux "art" that's around currently.

I don't know, do you think Family Guy would have made it onto the air in 1980?

They are...:|

How about Robert Downey Jr. putting on blackface in Tropic Thunder then.

Airplane! wouldn't get funding today not because of controversy, but because nobody can make a good Leslie Neilson style comedy anymore.

I thought Robert Downey Jr was brilliant in that role. That movie is hilarious in the beginning and middle but just gets ridiculous at the end. Great concept, mediocre implementation.

All I remember is something about Hari Krishnas and two black guys that could only speak in jive. I don't remember anything too bad though.

I was going to post that actually.

Yup, from wiki:

The show broke ground in its depiction of issues previously considered unsuitable for U.S. network television comedy, such as racism, homosexuality, women's liberation, rape, miscarriage, abortion, breast cancer, the Vietnam War, menopause, and impotence. Through depicting these controversial issues, the series became arguably one of television's most influential comedic programs, as it injected the sitcom format with real-life conflicts.
