Exactly.

Most of the time there is no reason for the Mods to ban an IP. If there is someone causing trouble from an IP range they email the abuse department for that ISP. In your example it is much more likely that the person posting from the AFB will get reprimanded for their network abuse. The same thing goes for most other networks. The Mods provide proof and the ISP deals with the problem person.
AOL is banned because they refused to do anything about the problem users using their sevices, even when the Mods came to them with proof. As a result nobody using an AOL IP is allowed to access AnandTech. I'm guessing if the Mods get a response ffrom Base Commander: Col. Suzanne M. Vautrinot along the line of "Then an anandtech guy walked by and tried to say something witty and ban me from life itself. HaHa lolzorz dork!" then that IP range is toast. If they get something like "The offending person has been sent to the firing squad" then all is good and there is no IP ban.![]()
From "Base Commander" you are incoherent.

Read the thread linked in the original post. The Mods sent an email addressed to Base Commander: Col. Suzanne M. Vautrinot. If Col. Vautrinot decides to ignore the Mods request to deal with that particular person they will have to take steps such as banning that IP range. What I quoted was taken from that dumbass' post, implying that the immature POS spamming the boards may be none other than Col. Vautrinot, and nobody will get reprimanded for this crap. That would suck and an IP banning would probably happen.
OTOH, Col. Vautrinot may get that person fired for violating their network policy. If that happens then there is no need for the Mods to ban anything. Who knows? If I posted any of that kind of crap from work I *know* I'd get fired. As soon as the Mods sent an email like that to our network admin security would come over and take me from the building, no questions asked.
If I did something from my home account I doubt SBC would really care. If I did it from work there would be trouble, especially if the Mods emailed the admin and my boss and his boss.Originally posted by: BlueWeasel
Maybe I'm just being naive, but I would think that many System Admins would just turn away. I'm not trying to demean the Sys Admins on AT who would take appropriate action, but I'm afraid many could care less.
Am I wrong about this?

Why can't they just ban by account? I thought you couldn't sign up for anandtech with free email addy's. If everyone used their ISP email, school email, etc etc., would they still have to ban by IP?
Many people here have personal web hosting and the ability to make new email accounts at will. All you'd have to do is make a new address to get around it.
Yeah I understand that there are many ways to come up with more email addresses, but what if anandtech limited the allowed email addresses to be the only ones that are provided by the ISPs?
Please compile a list of all ISPs on the planet. Thanks.
