Personally, I haven't had the best experience with Thinkpads.

T60 - crappy HSF which has led to overheating due to cheap ass fans that die too quickly and make too much noise

T400 - keyboard that has keys that stick and stop working, SSD that is as slow as molasses and crappy touchpad

X220 - not a big fan of the 720p display and crappy touchpad. Serveral coworkers have had to have their X220s replaced multiple times due to the SSD failing.

Oh, I can make arguments regarding old Apple computers too.

For example:

2006-2010 White MacBook: developed excrement-looking stain in palm rest. Bad build quality: plastic hinges broke for many people two-three years after using them and they got scratched extremely easily.

All aluminum MacBook Pros: they run hot under load, so much that at times they can burn. Crappy heatsink/fan cooling system.

As for the X220, one of the reasons you buy a ThinkPad is for the TrackPoint; to get away from having to use a TrackPad. SSDs failing? Yet to see reports of that, but I'll take your word for it. Also, there's an option for the X220 to have an IPS display which you should opt for since it's not an inexpensive laptop to begin with.

Additionally something like 50% of the people I know have an iPhone and it is heading into fad territory IMO.

heading? If anything I think it's pulling away from being a fad now that every company under the sun has released their own smartphone. I remember the first couple of versions of iPhones EVERYONE had. I'd say the Droid Razr is the new smartphone hype.

I've never thought apple products were too overpriced, since their build quality seems good. We have dell and apple laptops in our school and the kids are rough on them all. We have to replace parts for the dells constantly. The apples just take a beating yet just don't break anywhere near as often. I've never gotten comfortable with mac OS to buy one, and I'd be concerned about the availability of software and hardware for it...but from a quality standpoint, I can see the justification for a higher price tag.

I'd take my lenovo x220 over a macbook any day, any time that $500+ i saved will go towards more useful things, like a bidet for my toilet.

Must have been a really good laptop if you sold it after a year.

smart ass

Too heavy and big for carrying on public transit every day to and from campus. (hour and a half each way by bus) So I sold it and picked up the 15" Clevo in my sig.

Tell whoever is the one that buys laptops for your school to get ThinkPads, Vostros, or ProBooks instead.

I have been trading derivatives on the same pair of mac pros I purchased in 06.
They are rock solid beasts, built like tanks, reliable 24/7 operation. Best investment in a computing product in quite some time.

Its not overpriced junk in my opinion.

Look at it like a BMW.

If you can afford one and want to buy one, go nuts. However, you can get plenty of other perfectly fine cars for alot less money.

I just put together a computer for my mother inlaw w\ 8 cores, 8GB, mid-ranged graphics ( plenty for farmville!!! ) and it was ~$600. A comperable apple system would likely be 1600-2000. Probably a $50 proprietary cable here and there too.

They really came through as well. Lenovo is my pick if you want a cheap but decent laptop. Their high-end isn't quite as good as others though.

I think my current favorite non-Apple high end laptop is the HP Envy line.

acer timelinex are incredibly nice if you haven't seen or used one i highly recommend it before jumping up to the Envy line.

And just how many thousands of laptops have you tested for duability?

"Build quality" in apple fanboi lingo just means, "I think it's pretty."
Congratulations, you spent $1000+ on a fashion accessory.
lol, the only laptop I've ever broke was a macbook pro. it wasn't even mine :(

Heh, How often the "pro-apple" side resorts to making comments/insults about the "other side" being poor or not being refined to appreciate apple products.

lol social elitists.

Apple laptops are typically solid machines, but if I were in the market for a new laptop I personally would rather not spend the premium on a technology item that is still subject to the same obsolescence as a cheaper alternative.

Imac's on the other hand, I don't get at all. I much rather have a separate nice monitor and tower/"cpu unit" than have the two tied into one less flexible or upgradeable unit.

I think savings should be passed on to customers. A high profit margin indicates a short term money grab to me. BBY at one point had a similar business model and it ultimately backfired on them.

All because they can charge those prices doesn't mean they should charge those prices.

Their profit margin in the future will probably slide if a competitor or two gets their shit together. If the Costco & AAPL hissy fit is any indication they will not handle it very well. A high profit margin paves the way for competitors, even crappy ones.

If other manufacturer's provide the same customer service and had their own stores where you could walk in and get your products serviced/repaired, their prices would be much higher also.

Here's my opinion:

When I wanted to buy a laptop for my uncle as a gift, everything seemed too shitty except for Macbooks (in this case Macbook Air).

Really, every laptop nowadays feels like utter crap, except for Macbooks. It really isn't about "oh it's the same CPU/RAM, etc." It is about build quality and aesthetics, and that's it, at least for me (and many others it seems like).

Before the Lenovo takeover, my goto brand was Thinkpad, and rightly so. But after Lenovo shit all over that brand, Apple is the way to go.

BTW, I am typing this on a 3 year old Dell Precision, so I'm definitely not a fanboy.

What are you even talking about? ThinkPads now are just as good as they've always been.

Macs aren't even nearly the best when it comes to build quality.

Have you tried a lenovo lately? Very good build quality and bang for buck if you get the right line - I have an s2 and my dad has an s3, and oddly the fit and finish differs drastically (shiny, cheap plastics with seams everywhere on one while the other is built like a business machine). I've used a high end thinkpad.. I think it was an x200 or something like that, and that thing is a beast - fast, built like a tank, and attractive in an old school/business sorta way. But I still prefer my macbook air for aesthetic, personal, and warranty issues.

Literally just bought a mac mini - desktop that fits in my messenger bag and that will look sexy hooked up to my plasma, sweet :)

I honestly don't think you looked very hard at all. There are literally hundreds of laptop models and plenty of them have exceptional build quality.

i will disagree. i got 2 in a row that were junk. died in the first week. returned both and got an HP.
I wish that was the case, but everyone on my team who had an HP or Dell has had theirs replaced in the last 3 years. My Thinkpad is still going strong so they won't give me a new one. GOD I WISH IT WOULD BREAK!

This is your problem, you have the princess virus. You want everything to look sexy and sweet and pretty. Real men don't give a fck how it looks as long as it does its job well. You have fallen prey to the marketing, and we're going to have to revoke your mancard.

LOL. We're trying to get rid of the Lenovo's here b/c all they do is break. The touchpads on them are absolutely horrid.

Considering a never summer snowboard is probably around $500 and you can only use it for a couple months out of the year, $1000 is nothing.

Looks are important, this is why people didn't buy the Pontiac Aztec. I knew plenty of people who said "fuck that ugly car!" without knowing shit about it. Pontiac could have made it the more reliable car ever and nobody would have known. Because nobody wanted one. I hate ugly laptops, but I can't afford a Macbook, and the Windows laptops I see that are getting close to Apple's level cost either almost the same, or even a a bit more.

And "men" pay more all the time for looks, just go into the Case and cooling subform, expensive cases get bought all the time for their appearance. But for some reason it's only dumb when extra money is spent on buying a MAC not a PC, go figure...

A Range Rover's nicer than a Honda CRV, or whatever Honda's SUV is called. Some people don't care, so the Honda would be just fine. But if you want a nice SUV you're probably going to want the R.R.
