How does Ubi manage to ruin everything?

Took hours to get Far Cry 3 running. Once in I find I have to sit thru all kinds of crap just to start the actual game.
I'm already bored by the time I get control. Cant save. I made the incredibly foolish assumption a checkpoint must have been generated after all shit has passed by.
I get out.

Finally ready to go back in this evening.
Discover the autosave they generated was set before the start of the opening cutscenes.....

WHAT KIND OF [DAMN] MORON DOES THAT!????!!

Anybody know of a mod that lets you skip the intro portion?

Shorty, we're getting tired of you using profanity in PC Gaming. Please take the weekend off to reflect upon your actions.

FC3 Blood Dragons annoyed me with the far-apart checkpoints in the first mission. I fight through a bunch of baddies, get the to escort part of the mission, don't keep the patsy alive. Fair enough. It's late, guess I'll quit and re-try the escort part tomorrow.

Nope. The checkpoint was at almost the start of the mission. No, I don't want to replay the whole thing over again.

Thanks ubi. I guess you thought including "retro style" crappy 8-bit console checkpoints would add to the fun?

OK, after grinding away a bit I am having a small amount of fun.
Finally got my first rifle and enjoying things better. Sniping is productive, both on 2 legged and 4 legged prey.

Skinning has netted me larger bags and slings. I dont care much for the drugs or useless weapon enhancements or walking to a loot chest on a map and finding nothing. But its playable.

I also need to find out about the video settings. That haze and motion blur is bugging me.

Probably just to avoid the people that F5 every 10 seconds of progression. But seriously the game is very easy, even on hardest difficulty I had no problem.

Dude stick it out. FC3 is one of the best open world shooters in the last 5 years. Vas is an awesome villain.

There is a point where it gets tedious. But that is a long long way off if you are just starting.

I found the drugs pretty much useless as well....with the exception of the ones that show your pray...both man and beast.....I loved the game.

the hunting drugs are actually kinda nice. I found out the hard way not to wander around in tiger territory.

Yep. Just hang in there. Game is worth the investment.

Now that it's been out for a while and the mods are mature, I'm going to restart with mods and take another spin at it. Going to play it with the most difficult options, so I expect a 60+ hour ride.

They do make some curious design choices as far as game design is concerned. They make a great game in Far Cry 3 with a few elements that are maddening (the aforementioned save structure, and the bizarre tonal inconsistencies of the story where people go from mourning the dead to complete tongue-in-cheek nonsense within the same scene). They make a great game in Assassin's Creed 4, then pull you out of it for a joke that falls utterly flat in mocking life at a game production studio (to say nothing of the HORRIBLE eavesdropping missions). But I think every design studio does that to a certain extent. Despite their inconsistencies, Far Cry 3 and AC4 are two of the better games of the last couple years.

The bigger issue with UbiSoft is Uplay, which, now that it works in conjunction with Steam, isn't so bad, but is still moderately more annoying than it needs to be, especially when an update comes along and breaks Steam's "Big Picture" mode if you don't let it completely finish downloading and installing without touching anything; that's just stupid.

I don't think I've played a single ubisoft game that had a "good" story. It's always ridiculous.

Worst flaw that game has and one that Ubi said they make optional in an update patch but didn't, is that huge ass map/health meter onscreen. I much prefer the way they handled it in FC2.
Also some of the textures are lower res than in FC2 and I sometimes think the A.I. is slightly worse in some cases. I wasn't fond of hunting drugs, a game like that I'd rather try to play a little more realistically but overall it's a great game.

I found the retail version visuals were a little behind than what was shown off before release. Also Ubisoft games don't want to run on external storage. Blacklist, Blag Flag and FC3, all had to be installed on my primary disk.

This

FC3 was fun enough but it was a step backward from FC2 IMHO. Different strokes I suppose.

Nobody should buy anything from Ubisoft given their position on DRM.

Well they are much better lately. As long as it works and isn't too intrusive, not fond of Uplay and it's Ads but I'll take it over StarForce.

Hmm, FC3 is an open world type game? Are there random missions and upgrades, skill progression, that sort of thing?

I've never played a Farcry game (I hate shooters. well--pure shooters)

I really liked the direction they were taking their AI behaviors in FarCry2. It was the main reason I was stoked about FarCry3, only to be disappointed by the fact that didn't seem to bring any of the behaviors over, let alone expand on them.

Seems like AI scripting has really progressed very little since about the mid-2000s.

Well, Uplay is stupid and worthless and a hassle, so a big negative aspect of everything Ubisoft is having to put up with their Uplay software.

Beyond that, FarCry 3 itself trips over itself. It just can't get out of it's own way and that interfers with the gamers enjoyment of the game.

The inventory and menu system is atrocious and the level of BS to put up with in trying to update/upgrade the player would be possibly ok if it weren't for the deaf approach of how it's handled. Nothing like having guns not only materialize out of nowhere when you switch to it, but in FarCry 3 you are also greeted with a weapon buying system that is so hollow, boring, and game breaking that it's a wonder it made it through testing.

Other than that I love the open world and beautiful graphics, but the developers should have just said "No" to a number of things they did in the game.
