Wow, I hope I don't get that much trouble from EVGA. I'm in the process of an RMA and am planning to send out my 8800GTS 640meg tomorrow. Hopefully they'll at least send me back the same card...

Thats a current generation card, theyll send you the same thing.

Problems usualy crop up with cards that are no longer in production or are in short supply.

Actually most 7900GT's I've seen have been replaced with 7950GT's. I'd definately keep bugging them. Or post on their forums, usually people who post on their forums get looked at by EVGA.

Technically though it's not their fault the 8600GTS blows. I mean once the 7 series is phased out theres not much they can do. They could upgrade it to 8800GTS but that would be like doubling its value and a free StepUp. I doubt they could take that hit for every who wants to RMA. Anyone who wanted to would want a new greater card, would just RMA it whenever the last series phased out and get a card back and just double the value of the card.

Ever actually read what it is?

First off, it's not lifetime unless you register.
And once you register, you just locked yourself as the sole warrantied user, so if you ever want to sell the card, the next owner is f*cked.

Not to mention the OP's situation, which should never happen.
It's something companies try pulling on less knowledgeable users.

Ive had problems with EVGA, They are still better than PNY and XFX and all those other people that dont answer their phones and read from scripts when they do. You can climb the manager ladder at evga and get things done, they try to head you off with reg ol' csrs that dont know anything, but their manager can and will help you if you make enough of a stink.

Keep at it.

They test them upon reciept, working cards are sent back, and any "negligent looking" damage voids the warranty

Out of curiosity, the reason I'm RMAing my 8800 is that a capcitor wasn't fully soldered on and it fell off. Should I include that capacitor in the static bag when I ship the card, or should I put it in a tiny plastic bag of it's own, or even include it at all? I just don't want them to think the thing broke off while it was being transported.

I am the OP. Anyway I think with most items you buy today, the warranty doesn't transfer over if you give or sell the item to someone else. XFX's new double lifetime warranty has this transfer feature, but their new double lifetime warranty is only valid in the USA and Canada AND you also have to register the card within 30 days.

Also, XFX doesn't have a forum. I've gotten some help at EVGA's forums before from their employees.

Document what happened and include the information in the rma number when calling them so they know what to expect. Put the capacitor in a separate bag in the package and include a printout of the RMA email that you received to expedite the process.

How much do you want one company to do? I have had 3 rma's with evga and they have all been easy. They have tech support, people to talk too, forums.

They do a great job.

(I do not work for them)

I received the 8600GTS on Friday and have been playing with it this weekend. It seems to run much hotter than my 7900GT CO Superclocked as well. My 7900GT would idle around 50C. This 8600GTS idles around 65C. Also, when I start Windows now, the screen flashes pink and there are blocky polygon things all over the screen, then after that flash the screen is normal. I uninstalled the ForceWare drivers, ran CCleaner and some driver cleaners then installed the latest ForceWare for Vista Ultimate x64 and it's still doing that.

I have a 400W PSU. It came with my Shuttle XPC. They have really high quality PSU's as well. Reasons for RMA'ing my 7900GT are in the first post of this thread.

Ok, one of their customer service reps. called me this morning and had setup a new RMA already for this 8600GTS. They're going to be sending me this 7950GT KO Superclocked:

http://www.evga.com/products/pdf/512-P2-N637.pdf Warning: PDF File

I'm happy with this. It's not an 8800GTS, but if it was I'd have to go out and buy all this liquid cooling stuff just so I could fit the 8800GTS into my Shuttle (which would have been another hundred or so bucks I could save or use on something else).

I don't see why they even thought of sending you a 8600GTS at all. I emailed them earlier about replacement possibilities for my 7900GT when it died and they said I couldn't get an 8 series. I ended up getting a 7900GTO which can't OC at all :(

How long ago did you ask them? I think if you called just to ask them what you would get, they wouldn't really tell you. They don't want people sending in cards just to get a free upgrade. In my case, I just wanted my 7900GT CO Superclocked back, but they couldn't give it to me so all of this happened.

eVGA is good if you keep at them, the employees on their forum are super helpful and always reply to threads when customers have issues like this. I've even seen customers post unreasonable requests in very rude language (not like you at all) and still get helped.

A 7950GT (512MB?) should give you a bit better performance assuming you can achieve similar clocks.

The 8600GTS could turnout to be a useful gaming card in DX10 but probably not. It's not a fair replacement for a gamer.

no joke; pny sucks. i had a ti4200 from them that eventually just stopped sending video out to the monitor. by this time the geforce fx line was out, but it said "lifetime warranty" so i still tried to get it replaced. unfortunately, by lifetime, they mean lifetime of the product cycle (e.g. as long as they were still making/selling gf4 ti4200's). so they just didn't give me anything. IIRC, this was all over email. i tried calling them up, and i just got a machine. it said that all of the representatives were busy or they were closed or some sh1t, then said i could leave a message or call back later. right after that it hung up on me. a$$holes, they coulda sent me a 5600 ultra or something. after that i bought a radeon 9800.
