I'm not a fan of how EVERYTHING is an option on a mini. From different steering wheels to seats and colors to just about a million things that wouldn't have to be an 'option' on the majority of cars.

I understand that it's to give it a uniqueness to the each car a person buys but being charged an arm and a leg for every little thing is not cool.

Sounds like you are a bigger fan of package A, B, or C and thats it. I'd prefer to have everything a la carte.

Normally no, but MINI over charges for options. It's too easy to turn a $18,000 compact sports car to a $27,000 car... And that is without the turbo.

I know the pricing structure, I'm on my 4th MINI. :D I dont find things terribly overpriced versus any other car. Except that if I want Nav in a Honda or Toyota I'll have to buy 10 other things I didnt want.

It's not so much as I prefer one over the other but when your base car has only 2 colors standard and everything else is a $500 or more option that's a bit sketchy to me.

Yes they encourage you to customize but the price for every little thing is atrocious.

I don't get the hate on Mini parade, if it werent for the awful interiors they're actually pretty neat.

The interior on the newer ones (07+) is really terrible, I like the interior on the first gen though. Its hard to explain why... they integrated the radio into the giant speedo on the new ones and it just looks stupid. The climate control became super cheap looking and feeling verticle scroll wheels and buttons shaped in the form of the mini logo. The CD player being a random gray stripe in between looks lame also.

First gen had a normal radio/controls, smaller speedo and overall a much less 'cheap' looking interior. What's with so many cars feeling/looking cheaper these days?!

I used to think that Mini's were reasonably priced... until my bought myself a much larger and similarly optioned Chevy Cruze 5 years later for $2,000 less.

I also find it annoying that the 2012 Mini hasn't really changed from the 2007 model, yet it somehow costs $2,500 more now.

The Mini is what I might call "peppy" but it is not "fast". I have driven a MiniS, FWIW.

What's that got to do with anything? The point was everyone's knocking something they probably haven't even driven and say it's too much, too slow, but they don't even know what they're getting. I don't care what Edmunds says, or any other review for that matter. If someone told you to jump off a bridge...

Are there other options? Of course. But suggestions above are for cars that aren't even on the market yet...against a 3+ yo model. That Genesis is 3300 lbs...600 more than the Mini and STARTS at 24k.

How about this...

Must be OK then if they like it, right? It's old, but still there.

What happened to objectivity?

I didn't recommend a Genesis over the Mini.

You ask "what happened to objectvitity?", a surprising question considering I supplied a link with nothing but endless, objective numbers.

I said the car is small and slow for its price. And it's definitely small (even the name hints at this...).

If you don't care what edmunds or any other review says I doubt I could say anything you'd care about, either. Meanwhile, I can go and buy a large family V6 sedan for the same price and watch that mini in my back mirror. So is it slow? No. Is it slow for the price, considering it touts itself as a sporty car? Yep

I imagine it's like the Miata in that it is a very fun drive, but the Miata isn't quick, either. I am a person who just prefers power over handling. Some aren't and for them a mini may be preferable to brute power to weight.

man I've never been inside a Mini but it sure looks ugly and cheap.
Even the cheapest VW polo looks better than that in the interior.
I've never understood Minis. They cost a shitload of money and are girly cars anyway.

Also what's with the "I don't want to drive a "people's car"" bullshit?
it's not like they are any different from other mainstream brands, they started by making an affordable car for the people, but also wrote it in the name.

Also Mini is not german, it's british. Yeah it's owned by BMW, but so what? If you reason like that then chrysler is an italian brand.

It's easily more German now than it is British. The electronics are BMW, the motor was designed by BMW and built by the French. Development is still in the UK by BMW's UK branch.

But that's neither here nor there. It's far from what the Mini was in the Morris days.

Girly eh? Girly enough to get it's own racing series?

Doppel,

I wasn't referring to you about the Genesis recommendation. I was just making a comment about the reference Fmr12B made. Not towards you.

For that money, the Golf R isn't much more and is AWD. Better interior and more reliable (Mini is about the most expensive car to maintain under 50k today).

$31,000?

Buy a used Civic for $6,000 and spend the rest on hookers and blow. You'll have more fun, GUARANTEED.

$31K for an econobox? LOL there is no badge whoring going on here... none whatsoever.

This is similar to the Smart cars. If Ford, Honda, etc made the Smart car, it would MSRP for $8k, but because it's associated with "Mercedes" it's over $20k for just shy of 15 lbs of steel and a cloth seat. x.X

Since when does a anemic 3 cyl command a premium?

SMART cars MSRP for $13,950 for the base model (Destination, A/C & Automatic Trans included)

A fully loaded Cabrio can reach $21K with about every box checked.
