lets say you're 23 and graduated last year w/a degree in History.
you cant find a job, even at a McDonalds.

for whatever reason, tensions rise w/your parents and they kick you out of the house permanently.

You're now staying a friend's place but that's only going to last for a week or so.

What would you do?
Join the military?

you sound like a real loser

I have not. Ironically (or maybe not) in my day the ONLY people who joined the military after high school were those with very few other options or ambitions.

I did know a couple of guys in much the same position as the OP who entered the military a little later in life, during one of the recessions of the 80s. Big mistake. They were absolutely miserable. It's not quite the same for a 20-something who thinks he knows a little something as it is for a clueless 18-year-old who can barely find his own dick. There's a very good reason why people of that age are recruited and drafted to be cannon fodder.

I can see now that you do not have a clue about the military or have any idea what goes on in it. You know nothing and are not qualified to discuss it.

* Move to an area where jobs are more plentiful (bad relationships and unemployment aren't enough reason to hang around)
* Swallow pride and crawl back to parents, hoping they will take pity
* Make new friends for couch surfing (shouldn't be a problem for someone with a history degree and ample time on their hands)
* Joining the military may not be such a hot idea for someone used to no discipline, seeing as they tend to practice quite a bit of it
* Another option is applying for disability and getting on as many government handout lists as possible

By 23, I had been working full time for 6 years and married for 4.

Damn. Why didn't you just say become a full time moocher. Geez. What kind of advice is this? Crappy Advice.

The military will teach you discipline. Easy just do what you are told. It isn't hard.

If they'll take you. It was my understanding that the military wasn't a guaranteed job anymore.

Well, yeah. It has changed a lot since I was in. But if he isn't a dumb ass he should be able to swing it and the chances for an excellent skill room and board ... can be gotten for free.

After finishing my BA I moved back in with my parents. They are very supportive and wanted to give me every chance to succeed in life. I had a full time corporate job for a year and saved my wages so I could go to graduate school without loans.

After grad school I spent 5 months underemployed and lived with my parents for two of them after my apartment lease ran out and I didn't want to commit to another year since I was looking for work all over the country. I soon found a job and and moved out again and have had career stability ever since.

My family has been instrumental in helping me achieve my career goals. I couldn't have done it without their support.

How can someone not get a job at McDonalds? This is where your post fails. The only thing that would cause this is some location that does not even have a McDonalds then it becomes a problem of location. I live in Pittsburgh and there is about 1000 grocery stores and they are always are hiring. If someone says they can't get a job then they did not even try. Ya sure it is minimum wage bit it is a job.

something more going on if he can't even get a job at some place like mcdonalds. There have to be tons of low wage jobs out there that don't require education.

what are you not telling us?

This is the wrong place to ask that question. Everyone knows that the average AT'er still lives in his mom's basement at age 40.

With that said, the first option is to swallow your pride and go talk to the parents. But if I had to guess, this is going to take some talking because the reason tensions rose is probably because of the "dead end" status that you're currently on and they want that to change.

Another option is to apply for a government handout (food stamps), then get a low paying job to tide you over while you work out your future.

Either option, you're going to need to take a long look and see what you want out of life and where you want your future to be. I say go to graduate school or some kind of trade school. Carpentry or electrical work are relatively easy to learn. If you're more tech oriented, then learn programming or something in IT. The important thing is to learn skills that are in demand and will continue to be in demand. Get a job in your new field.

From my experience, the people who cannot get a job (even at McDonald's) have a serious problem. Either their resume is shit or they interview like shit because they never learned how to do either. OP needs to do a lot of studying or take some classes on how to get a job, maybe do some faux interviews.

There ARE jobs out there. Because there are so many job seekers, those in hiring positions get to be as choosy as they want. Even fast food may only be hiring the best available applicants.

I found out that my girlfriend, who had been unable to find any job for several months, had this problem. I helped her write her resume so she got all the interviews but she doesn't interview well. She has an issue where she can't explain things well and ends up making hand gestures because she hasn't found the words yet, and it looks terrible. Its an anxiety thing. I had never seen her do it at home but I noticed she does it in places like at doctor's appointments.

A little coaching and remaining calm nailed her next interview, although it was only for a minimum wage job at Fred Meyer, it was better than six more months of unemployment.

That situation doesn't happen. If you can't get a job at Mcdonalds one week, you might get it the next week given the turnover rate at that place. You could also stand outside a Home Depot and get paid cash as a day laborer. You could go to a hiring agency like willstaff or the like and pick up odd jobs pretty quickly too. I know because I had to do it once. They got me a short term job at a days notice. It was a shit job, but it paid. Given my experience scraping up enough work to survive for years on end, I ALWAYS have the suspicion that people who claim to be in the situation the op describes are lazy whiners who aren't trying hard enough.

Someone who graduates with a degree in history has no doubt gotten an excellent education. I'm a history buff myself so I am not going to slam all liberal arts degrees just for fun. But what you haven't got is very good job prospects. You've proven you're intelligent and can stick with a program and learn, but that's about it. There just aren't many jobs for liberal arts majors. You sort of have to make your own. I don't know if your friend has any technical aptitude, but software has long been a career destination for historians, sociologists, and students of western lit with nowhere else to go.

If you can't get a job you aren't trying to get a job or you are a fucking moron. Especially if you can move around, buy a bus ticket.

After reading all the replies, particularly those from the ex-grunts, I have to wonder whether the OP even mentioned joining the military with any seriousness. Or whether it was thrown out there as the last thing that he could imagine doing, even for someone with absolutely no means of support and no other options.

Which is why there is so much poorly written code out there. ;)

Food stamps, recover relationship with parents and do temp work.

Temp work not mandatory, you could also steal or slang.
