How does an air filter clean the intake air? It's just paper!

The paper has many microscopic holes in it. It allows oil/air/whatever to pass through, but larger particles of whatever are trapped.

I've heard that shoving a pair of pantyhose (queen size or bigger) down the dipstick is a better solution for filtering, plus you get to rage against the auto industry.
