Those stories don't actually happen. At least not often enough for there to be "stories" plural. I believe there is a documented case of a WWII paratrooper who survived a fall but I'm not sure if even that is well founded.

If the person falls with their arms spread wide, maybe wearing cushioned clothing, and lands on something soft?
