I think your missing a point to all of this as well, most people are communicating on cell phones. Even if you on a land line it still gets converted to digital ... But it's not like the old days any more. The point is, we can store a lot of data (cell phone calls) digitally. Then with sophisticated software we they can pretty much know if your going to bomb a certain target or grow plants down in the basement. With this type of technology you should be very afraid. All in the name of terrorism. Thanks, Bush.

Not only do they have a record of what your said but they have a time and date stamp and pretty much know where you are of 5 miles of when you said it. You'd be surprised of all the crap that is said on a telephone these days. This is just the tip of the ice burg just think what they are doing with texting and email. Scary I know...

It's "only" retroactive immunity that violates the prohibition in Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution against ex post facto laws.

And because our democratic leadership has betrayed the principles we expect by supporting it, and Obama has put out a statement setting the stage to vote for it.

It's usually better to discuss an issue and push your representatives *before* the vote happens... the point isn't for it to pass and then post criticism.

Maybe because some of us actually expect our government to obey it's own laws, and not break them?

Maybe because we feel that when you break the law, you should get punished, and not get a bunch of money and a "get out of jail free card" given to them by bought and paid for congressman?

Maybe because we don't agree with Bush's idea that he is above the law, and can ignore our very laws, the ones he is sworn to uphold?

Fixed for accuracy. Until the people of the US elect those who create these bills to actually do the right thing, we'll have more of the same. Once again it's the Senate's fault, not the presidents. No bill, no law.

No, it's both of their faults. No presidential signature, no law. No presidential agitation for this legislation, no law. In fact, no massive illegal warrantless wiretapping program by the president, almost certainly no law.

I agree partially, but ultimately, the fault lies with Bush. His idea that he can break the law, and can do what he wants doesn't require anything from Congress. And his admin's constant willingness to break the law, and conceal it behind "national security" is all his fault. He ordered the law to be broken, not Congress.

Congress has failed to smack the shit out of him (figuratively speaking) and stopped this kind of abuse. And for the most part, they have gone right along with him, but it was/is still his decisions.
