You can try to sort, categorize, use any system you want, OP, but in the end, you have kids who will take the path of least work when forced to pick up their Legos, namely piling them all into one container. That's going to be esp. true for the 5 year old.

Good luck trying to force any other storage method on them. :)

my 5yo's don't really play them after building them. For those who have older children, do they play them until they're 10+?

We all play them and have an entire city in the basement + 2 train sets. I will post some pics one of these days but we have a LARGE collection. Heck we just had a neighborhood lego party not too long ago......kids of all ages loved it.

I actually enjoy sorting Legos/organizing. I bought bunch of small plastic containers (rubbermain I think). I have larger ones as well.

Mind you, I would NOT do this for very young children (up to 7-8) as you will find yourself sorting A LOT.

I actually build legos so.....I sort them in the following order.

Blocks by color in separate bins
Angled pieces/roof pieces (all colors together)
Separate Large Plates (bigger than 2x4) all colors together
Separate Small Plates (2x2 - 2x4) all colors together
Thin plate pieces (1x) all go into one small container.
Special plates (angled etc) all colors
House bin (doors, windows, trees)
Car pieces (cockpits, seats etc)
Wheels pieces
Large plates (all colors)
Translucent pieces (all colors)

I find this to work best when I need to find a piece. Once you get most pieces together, sorting thru color is no big deal.

filled to the damn brim.

He also has a few boxes in the basement with the more valuable sets that are still whole.

He says he will play with them one day. Probably when he's my age :)

I have an extensive Lego collection. I spend around $2000 per month on the stuff. Times that by a couple of decades and you get the idea. Consequently I have four external storage rooms filled with it. Eventually it also overwhelmed my house, so I bought a second house to live in. That was my ultimate solution to my Lego storage problem. I know this sounds like a joke, but those in the Lego community know that I'm not kidding.

Pics?

People actually sort legos? I thought all of the fun was in seeding through bucket upon bucket of legos to find the single piece you were looking for.

That's fun until your back starts hurting and you have 10-20 more pieces like that to find.....

Also depends on how much legos you are sorting thru.....we can easily fill up couple of huge bins with ours. :)

Well, we don't have that many Legos that we need to sort all the Legoes into their own yet. We have some sets of Legi that we keep together in ziploc bags so you could rebuild a complete set pretty easily. However, we want to help the kids work on their imagination and creativity by not keeping all the Leggi in their own sets and letting them build things on their own pulling from the big bin full of Lego.

Maybe if I go get all my old Legos from my parent's we'd have enough to really need to sort but I guess we'll see.

Thanks.

If you have legos you don't want/need, feel free to send it this way. I will pay shipping hehe

Thats what we use. but we found one that had a bunch of 2 inch drawers. the 6inch ones are just to big.

I had plans on how to build a nice table with them. trying to find them but lost the picture.

ha found it.
