I love oatmeal and make it a lot...
I first use rum soaked rasins to top it with brown sugar, but i also use milk instead of water in boiling it. i add vanilla extract to it with cinnamon as well as nutmeg

I use oats that are thick rolled, takes 20 minuets of simmering to cook. While it's cooking, I will add died fruit, cherries (a favorite), blueberries, golden rasins and cranberries. Works for me. A little extra water needs to be added.
20 minuets! I take my morning shower while it simmers. :)

It really is. I only use the regular, not quick oats to make it. It takes a bit longer, but the flavor and texture is sooo much better.
Also, to make rum rasins, just get some rasins, put them in a sealable container with half water half rum (i use dark rum) and marinate them over night. They get plump and juicy and make the oatmeal even better!

Can you leave the raisins soaking longer, or will this overkill them? If I can leave them in the jar that way indefinetly it would be a nice way to always have rum raisins on hand.

I know that a few friends of mine used to keep a jar of bourbon cherries, but those things were probably more potent than rum raisins.

they kind of get "worn" looking and i have found will eventually decompose. although, i guess you could not keep them in the rum the whole time. once they are plump, transfer them into a air-tight container without a lot of moisture. that could work.

Butter!

Or Margarine. If you like to go really crazy add crumbled bacon.

This is probably a question of what you're used to. I was raised eating oatmeal with butter, and I just don't like any of the sweet flavorings. My wife grew up with sweet oatmeal and can't get used to butter.

We taught our kids the butter way and now they don't like sweet (oatmeal).

Butter is also the choice of many winter mountaineers for the extra calories.
