So... ATOT, how do you spend you pay for your daily expenses? things like grocery, produce, restaurant gas etc?

Today at work I heard a guy talking balancing his check book, then told us about how plastic gets them spending uncontrollable and so they stick to cash and checks. I told them about how I make about $100 every 3 months by using my CCs another guy talked about his fear off CCs and their exorbitant fees which makes him stick to his Debit Card.

Credit card for groceries, gas, purchases over $20. Cash for <$20, generally speaking.

I'm not earning much, so I'm very careful with my expenses. I pay off my cc balance every month.

I'ev got about 20 cents in change right now. I've had as much as $5 in my wallet at one time for the past month probably.

Use Mr. Mastercard and Mr. Visa for everything. My debit card has no usable cash on it (just enough to avoid the monthly service charge).

I pay for most things with credit cards. Occasionally, if the purchase is small and if it is a small business, I use cash to be kind.

Studies do show that people spend more on average if they are using a CC. Thus that guy's fear of uncontrollable spending is based in fact. You just need to keep self-control. Debit card fees can be just as bad if not worse, so he is deluding himself on the rest.

You should flip that around since you are using the least secure one for the least secure area. 🙁

I have a second account that I don't keep much money in at all unless I am purchasing something large that I use for just online purchases. I just don't care for CC's even with their perks.

Yea.. those perks like fighting for you when a purchase goes bad really suck!

Never said they suck, and some are useful but I've never had need for one. I do have 1 CC for emergencies but never had to use it yet. I've seen way too many people live outside of their means due to CC's. Way I see it, if I don't have the money to pay for it right now then I can wait. I also know the type of person I am and I know I would probably end up spending more money they I want too cause I could just put it on the card.

The argument against credit cards because people can't control themselves defies all logic to me. Are these people all obese sex crazed maniacs as well? Is all their effort and energy drained on fighting the urge to cheat on their spouse and spend half their working day at krispy kreme instead of work?

Do they take the back roads when driving home because they're afraid if they drive down main street and see a mcdonalds and starbucks they will have to pull over and get a big mac and coffee?

These people don't deserve the benefits and perks of being a responsible credit card user.

credit for just about everything, pay off each month (well did that for 10 years before I went and bought a 2nd house before I sold the 1st one, and then accumulated an 11+K balance .... this was about 2 years ago ... I've since paid it down to like 2K .... I am not very thrifty though... so I'm not saving as much, or paying as much off as I could ....

Anyhow ... it'll be paid off this year as long as I still have a job.

Credit card for everything possible (B&M and online) except <$20 purchases at locally owned businesses.

- Debit for local, credit for online.
- Cash for small places that either don't take debit/Visa, or else which use dial-up for verification and if it's only a small purchase. Though I usually have less than $5 cash with me at any time, if at all.
- Check for rent.

Keeping spending under control is easy: I don't buy stuff I don't need, or which I can't readily afford, and I don't spend a lot.
Why this is so difficult, I may never understand.

About 90% cash, and 10% money orders.
