How do you set boot order in UEFI?

In all BIOS I have ever seen there is an option to set the boot order for devices. At least it is essential to be able to switch between CD ROM and hard drive. I have an EVGA motherboard that uses UEFI instead of any BIOS I am familiar with. I believe I have followed evey branch in the UEFI set up and have found no place to select the boot order. UEFI has a folder called BOOT which is where you would expect to be able to set boot order, but I am virtually certain there is no place in it to do so.

I would appreciate it if any of you can steer me to where to set boot device order.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I have just gone through every line in in the Advanced tab several times and as best I can tell there is no place in it in which you can set the boot device sequence.

My bare bones system is on the bench. Motherboard+ram+cpu+hdd+psu+ graphics card

Thanks for the reply. I had found that post in all my searching -- but it didn't help or lead to anything that did.

The logical thing was a suggestion from the EVGA forums to go to the BOOT tab and open the Boot Options Priorities and change the boot order there. The line is in the menu, but the down arrow will only advance through the first nine lines and will not highlight Boot Options Priorities so I can't do that.

Could that be because there's only one storage device connected?

clicking F12 or holding it down during startup has no effect. The setup page opens in either case.

I have a SATA harddrive and a SATA CD drive attached. Have tried three different HDs -- have many here in the lab -- several different SATA cables and changing sockets they are plugged into on the MB. Nothing made a difference

Significant bit of information

I have a CD with Ultimate Boot CD version 5.2.7 on it. I put it in the CD drive and restarted. Instead of the setup screen it now opens the Ultimate Boot menu of softwares.

So the system can see the CD and read it. It still reports no harddrive detected though

This system is driving me nuts.

Put in the Windows XP installation CD since it could see the Ultimate Boot CD and restarted. Get the expected Press any key to boot from CD. Pressing keys has no effect -- yet if I am in setup the keyboard works just fine.

Any ideas. Tried another Windows installation CD with same result.

What motherboard, optical drive, and hard drive(s) are you using?
Is your bios set to use AHCI? have you checked over your SATA settings?
Using windows XP?

this seems like it's a similar thread, but doesn't seem to provide a solution.
Hmm is that you? hah the thread's several months old, but the username is somewhat similarish and it's a z68 board.

Gustavus, I don't see where you have told us what the model number is. Please let us know.

The motherboard is an EVGA Z68 FTW. I have tried with three different SATA hard drives a Seagate 1.5 GB, and Western Digital 1 GB and 640 MB. Have tried two CD drives, an ASUS and a TSST. Have changed out cables several times -- have many here in the lab. Also tried several different sockets on the MB. Even replaced the SilverStone PS I originally bought for this build with a Seasonics Platinum 660w I bought a couple of weeks ago from Newegg just to eliminate one more possibility.

Several months ago EVGA RMAed the motherboard. There is the possibilty they "repaired" the original board and sent it back to me -- but the problems were the same with the replacement board as the original

hopefully they provide some more info that might help

from evga forums http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=2117450
The error message is:
Marvell 88SE61xx Adapter

BIOS Version 1.1.0 L72
Adapter 1
Disks Information
No Hard Disks detected!

seems mostly like a hard drive detection issue, and not a boot order thing.
have you tried disabling the startup splash screen to see what's going on at startup (disable quick boot & silent boot)?

also fyi, it'd probably be easier for people to help you if you kept all of this to fewer threads.

Thought I was asking a separate question. The UEFI BIOS is new to me and the motherboard manual doesn't have a single word about the BIOS.

Quick boot and silent boot are disabled.

If I put a Windows installation CD in the CD drive, it goes to the "Press any key to boot from CD" as it should but pressing keys has no effect. On the otherhand if I start into the setup screen I can make and change entries from the keyboard.

Thanks. Their online manual is the most pathetic thing I have seen for a board. The issue seems to be the you can't get to the option to set the priority. When you pull up where is should be, nothing. So it really doesn't matter what parts swapping you do if the boot priority is messed up.

When you posted on the EVGA site, I didn't see any better responses.

At this point, I recommend you contact EVGA and ask them how to do this. If you do exactly what they say, and still can't get it right, then they owe you are board that works correctly.

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help. It gravels me to give up but I have off and on for a year tried to get this board to work. I have spent lots of time on the phone with the US EVGA tech support and their final suggestion was to RMA the board again. Shipping is a negligible additional expense to what I have already put into this system so will do that.

And it is the poorest excuse I have ever seen for a manual.

I have checked SATA setting and tried both IDE and AHCI -- not RAID. I have had the e-SATA controller both enabled and disabled with no effect.

The reason for asking about boot order was the possibility that was the problem. It appears it tries to boot from CD which should be fine since that is where I would be installing Windows from. I am tearing the system down to RMA the motherboard one more time.

Again thanks to everyone who replied trying to help. I've been with Anand Tech from the beginning and it is the best community I have found on net.

Do you have a USB keyboard? Make sure (borrow a keyboard that has the round style connector) and make sure Legacy USB is on in BIOS.

Just a shot in the dark. Good Luck

Thanks. I do have a USB keyboard. The system recognizes it when I am in Setup since I can enter and make changes and have them stored. It is only at the start of a Windows installation when the line Press any key etc. that the system fails to see that a key has been pressed. I spent a very long time on phone yesterday with an EVGA tech who suggested I RMA the board for a second time. We went through a long bit of troubleshooting. Luckily I have a well equipped lab so we could make all sorts of swaps and changes while he made suggestions.

The motherboard is now packed and will be returned to EVGA later today

On you new board, make sure legacy USB options in the BIOS are set to enabled. I have noticed on later boards there is often more than one listing of this (USB 2, 3, keyboard, mouse etc.)

Thanks for the tip. I'll double check when setting up the next board.
UEFI is a deplorable replacement for the classic BIOS's: Award, Phoenix, AMI etc. Those are well documented and I am very familiar with them from having setup many systems. Even extensive net searches have turned up inadequate information on UEFI. Compounded by the fact that EVGA doesn't have a single word about the BIOS setup in their manual. I asked the EVGA tech during our long phone conversation yesterday if he could direct me to a reference and he couldn't.
