How do you quit a job?

Okay... My real question is...

Do you quit before or after you've found another job? I know it should be after, but the new employer never seems to be able to give me the two weeks... So I take the new job, and my old employer is suddenly left with three days notice before he's up the creek...

At my last job it took them two months to replace me...

how do I avoid this?

I told an employer "I don't think this is working out - I can't stay." And I left.

EDIT: Oh... just give as much notice as you can, that's what most people do. I know it sucks when you have a conscience, but, it's better than just walking out or no-call/no-show.

Tell your new employer that you would like to give two weeks notice. Most are willing to do this. If they aren't are you sure you awant to work for them.

I have only not givin notice once. The company screwed me out of about 250 bucks and when I bitched they called me a theif. I called in sick the next day and then I got a job offer that day, and quit. The company was shocked I was willing to start that next day and when I explained why they agreed.

As you know two weeks notice is common curtiousy, but if the new employer needs someone *now* and can't wait then you might have to give yer current/ex boss the short end of the stick. Passing up a promising position because you can't give two weeks to yer current job isn't very smart IMO. I know you don't want to screw yer current employer but the days of loyalty and businesses helping those who've helped them are over. If your current job was going to lay you off/fire you would they give you two weeks notice? No. They would give you a pink slip at 10am and tell you to be about by 5.

Being curious, loyal, and a hard, honest worker are attributes that will help you on matter where you go. But there is a point where those attributes will hinder rather than help you and you always need to be aware of that.

You quit after you find another job. You don't want to be stuck unemployed. Do you really think the company would hesitate to lay you off if it was in their best interest? Of course not.

Don't the companies in US have an agreed duration on how long you need to give them a notice b4 you decide to leave? In Malaysia, it's usually either 1 month or 3 months. Unless your new companies is so kind to pay you to leave your old company :)

You're right... I'm just taking contracts right now, and these things need to start ASA I'm hired practically... But deep down I know you're right. I guess I just need to to know if I'm missing something obvious here.

get yourself fired if you are worried about them finding a replacement, or just say I am looking for another job might be leaving soon.

Nope.
In most states employment is "at-will" meaning you can get fired at any time for any reason and you can quit at any time for any reason.

It's *proper etiquette* to give at LEAST two weeks notice.

You don't want to burn bridges, so I would advise giving ample notice, as well as a formal letter of resignation that includes a fair bit of sucking up. If you leave an employer on a positive note, they'll be much more likely to give you good references.

amnesiac: Gee.. That svcks. It's detrimental to both parties IMO. Perhaps I'm too used to the system here. I guess that's why there are lawsuits saying that employees have been dismissed in a wrongful manner..

Yeah, but that just pisses off your copy machine repairman. Not a good thing to do. :)

Find a new job first, then turn in your two weeks notice to your old boss and let him deal with it. I'm sure if it were the other way around he'd do the same thing to you.

Actually, this is how I look at it- I've NEVER gotten notice from any of the jobs that I got fired from (laid off - was never my fault).. I would have ADORED two weeks notice- instead, I was basically kicked out without even a day to make arrangements.. So, since most companies have no respect for the working (wo)man, why should you? Unless, of course, you're working an internship or some other situation where you really need the employer's reference in the future.. Also, I would find a job first.. The economy isn't very good so a crappy job is better than no job (i'm unemployed so I know)..
