For example, try to drop the clutch on a WRX or similar and you'll break the tranny.

Then they should have built a better tranny!

Seriously, it is going to depend drastically on your car/engine, but it is all about getting the power to the ground. Wheelspin is generally bad, although it makes for a much more dramatic launch and has the useful side effect of making it easier to get your engine into it's powerband - but that is no good if you aren't going anywhere.

would it be the tranny taht would give way first, or the differential?

Shift gear to 1st, Depress clutch, rev to 7000, release clutch

I've done this exactly one time in my life...

*beerspray*

What the god damned hell did you do that in, and how old were you? 😛

man I would be afraid when the car would start moving-hopefully it would still move, otherwise you just busted your tranny😉

Neutral drop or brakeload (other names for it too). Former is retarded and will kill your car. Latter isn't retarded, but will still hurt your car. Specifically, the transmission and the torque convertor in that order.

Powerbrake. Hold the brake down, start giving it gas until the tires just start to spin with you still at a standstill. Then release the brake, floor the accelerator.

not if you're doing it in a rental

If you got an auto and drive a higher revving enginer:

1) Rev to 2000 RPM in Neutral and drop it to D4 on the launch

2) Keep it on 1st gear and shift "manually" to stay in the power band longer

3) Pop up the hand brake while slightly gassing the engine a tiny bit and drop it to launch a bit harder

4) Just slam on the accelerator and pray

No guarantees on the life of your tranny but if you change the fluids often, it should keep you moving!

Street racing is fun, I do it all the time.

You sick, sick bastard, driving up the maintainence costs.

Pics / video of tire-smoking action? 😀

also why the hell do people with autos think they have a manual when they have D4, D3 etc? They think that since they move the shifter, they drive a stick? Wouldn't that also make it slower, and would it hurt the car?

I suspect the answer to both questions is something like "I was 16." 🙂

edit: oops read "What the god damned hell did you do" as "why did you.... " 🙁

1) Neutral drop = Ricer launch, you lose + kill your transmission.

2) Wannabe manumatic = Manhandle your transmission + no benefit.

3) Smoke your brakes and gain no brakeload advantage

4) No torque no go.

And redlining your Mommy's Corolla at a stoplight is not street racing. Sh!t, I'll put odds down on my Civic smoking you.

Tranny. Documented cases of idiot ricers in WRX's doing exactly that. Ralli, your Scooby has the same tranny but its "reinforced". Basically the tranny is the weakest relative to the differentials.

Personally, my car should be revved to about 5k and not dropped but apply just enough power to minimize wheelspin. Powerband in my car is 5-7k. Oddly enough I've never done it.

Alright, someone confirmed it. I had some common sense to think this would not help, nor is it good for your car. Looks like you're wrong😉

Yep. In anything recent - as in "new enough to have four speeds on the auto" - the fastest speed will be from a brakeload launch, followed by flooring the gas.

that is where the 'Type-R' badges come in.
