Considering how poorly people mispronounce ethnic names, these actually are generally the best choices, even if phonetically inaccurate. Better to be close and English-sounding than to completely botch a name trying to sound authentic.

I remember reading that "Ng" is pronounced "mm"

reference (man I love e2)
Well, that's not necessarily authoritative. I'm not a linguist, but for example the "ng" sound (and some other sharp consonants) present in Cantonese have long been toned down/eliminated in HK Cantonese, which has the most global influence in the last few decades. From what I recall reading, these sounds are fairly ancient, and disappeared from Northern Chinese dialects millenia ago, which is why Cantonese pretty much sounds nothing like "Mandarin" for example.

My last name is Nguyen.

Ng - "Eng"

Nguyen - "New Yen" or "Na Gu Yen" or "New Win" or "Win"...

Even if you ask people who have that name you'll get different answers due to cultural/regional/local/personal habits. Let alone asking people who were born in the USA and only know how people who don't know the original pronounciation say it.

Always fun when Americans, who can't even speak proper English, try other languages ;)

I have done some work for folks with both surnames.

Ng = Ing

Nguyen = Nwin

(at least that was their pronunciation)

yes, Nguyen is vietnamese :p and all of you have the "american" pronounciation of it down... now how you really pronounce it... there be an accent in there somewhere and whatnot. of course, being american born, i can't even pronounce exactly right :)

i try to combine it since my first name is Linh... Linh "win" just sounds funny. Altho, again, technically my name is pronounced "ling" but I never caught on.

One of my friends had the last name Ng.

It is pronounced "ning" like "ding" except with an N in front. :)
