jeez. At home, its just My PC (L3p3r-M355i4h, my gaming tag for LAN's and such), my brother's PC (Abaddon) My brother's Laptop (Abaddon-L) and the server (Sever).

At work its normally like Westwood-DCMAIN, for (duh) the Main domain controller, Westwood-DCBACKUP, which actually runs a couple of web based programs and Westwood-Exchange (Duh!!)

we do something like the domain name, a dash, then the function... at least mostly.

like if the domain name was foo, we'd have:

foo-fp = file and print server
foo-sql = sql server
foo-backup = backup server
foo-websense = websense server
foo-doc = document server

My home servers are Forsaken, Superman, and Apocolypse, no real convention for choosing the names, just what I like :D

/edit When I worked as a sys admin our servers were named

Dev, Test, Live, Mail1, Mail2, Gateway1, Gateway2, some others for more specialty boxes

The only system I've ever (creatively) named is my current desktop "B-52" for the large case, huge storage capacity (well, a and a half year ago when it was "new") and the fact that the old fans (which have since been replaced) sounded like said bomber on takeoff. All my other computers were simply named after their CPU by concatinating the processor line (i.e. athlon) and speed (i.e. 1700)
