I name everything from Star Trek. Each computer is a ship such as Enterprise, Voyager, Defiant, and then the main desktop which acts as a file server is DS9.

The first letter tends to match the function, V for vpn, E for Exchange, etc. At my earlier job it used to be XXYYZ#### where XX was the country code, YY was for city, Z was for workstation or server, and #### was the number.

At one of the schools that I support they name their servers things such as Hufflepuff, Slytherin and all kinds of other Potter related names that I can't remember.

As for me, my main pc is boringly named OFFICE which I need to think of something brilliant to change it to. Ideas? Anyone want to help?

The others are HDPC and HTPC. HT for the projector and HD for the HDTV it is connected to.

My good friend named his servers after small towns in our area. I really liked that.
There was no chance it was a person's name, he found towns like
ohop
sultan

I think about what they do, and I add "er" to the end, you know, like Mitch Hetberg.

I don't have any at home, but at work they're named after characters from the Lord of the Rings.

The fun and exciting role naming convention...you know "files1," "exchange," and the ever-popular "ftp."

We don't have any formal naming conventions where I work, but I try to stick to a naming combination that includes the department, server use, and server number.

So, if the Finance department requests a second DB2 server, it's going to get called FINDB202.

But, like I said, we don't have any formal requirements. If the customer wants the server to be called ZIPPY, it gets named ZIPPY.

Usually mythological figures for servers.

Workstations are usually more flexible with something like the names of famous locations. But that's only because I used to constantly be upgrading and fixing and moving the old workstations we were using so there was no point giving them relevent names. :) Now they're all identical systems so there's still no point.
