How do you meet new friends?

I am 25, work full time, go to school full time and have a wife and son. But the few friends I had are all moving out of state. I will pretty much have no friends by the end of the month, with the exception, if you consider co workers friends.

I am just wondering how to meet some new friends. Seems weird going to a club or something by myself. And I would prefer to keep my friends, mine and not ours, so don't want to take the wife with me. How do you do it?

Seriously though, in college, I have twice started at schools where I know nobody. What did I do? I butt into conversations with classmates. I pipe up whenever I can add anything and just join up w/ groups. Made plenty of friends that way.

I join groups that have the same interests as me.
For example, I am a member of a boating group and an ATV riding group. Both groups do something at least monthly and often more often.
For example, we just had a party this weekend and both groups were here. We went ATV riding but not boating.

So find something you like doing and see if you can find a local club.
IE:
bowling league
hiking club
car club
etc....

Im not taking any applicants at this time.
I have a wife and son also.
My best friend died last year but I have all the good friends I need at the moment.

Work. Church. Forums/other online communities. Through friends and relatives of existing friends. It's pretty easy if you try.

Taking application for new best friend

Position Summary

On Saturday January 14th I will be moving to (your location here) from (wherever) and will be dismissing my current best friend from his 12 years of service and am now taking applications for the position. Your duties will be to serve as best friend to me, (your name and age and stuff). Hours may vary depending on how often I get laid but expect to work weekends and some weeknights. The position of best friend requires that you be socially available for late night drinking and general tomfoolery. I am seeking someone relatively irresponsible with a bad work ethic that is eager to have an entry level position in what I hope is a growing team.

Responsibilities

-Be available for going out to the bar when requested to do so. Failure to do so may result in the best friend being referred to as a "p*ssy".
-Remind management to close their tab at end of the night.
-Act in the role as wingman/woman with the understanding that the favor will be returned. This may or may not require jumping on the "grenade".
-Be available as a doubles partner in a game of pool.
-Light clerical/typing.

Requirements

- 5-10 years partying experience.
-High drinking tolerance as management is known to call "shots" quite frequently.
-Have knowledge of local night life.
- Be willing to both take and dispense insults in a friendly manner.
- Hand to hand combat proficiency a plus. I have been known to talk sh!t to people much larger than I while intoxicated.
- Knowledge of pop culture references i.e. Simpsons, Family Guy, Office Space, Fight Club, etc..

Application Procedure

Please submit your resume in response to this ad with the subject title "Best Friend". Applicants who are available to pick me up from the airport on Saturday will be given first priority.

Usually through new activities or through current friends.

For me, I met a few friends at work and I meet new friends through them and one of them took me with him to church and I met more friends there.

I met a boatload of friends through a local car club... also from mountain biking.

its ALL about similar interests.

I have a really hard time becoming friends with people. I moved around a lot as a kid so I don't have any life long friends.
I have a lot of acquaintances but no really close/best friends. Sometimes I like it that way, other times I don't. It seems like it's much easier for my wife to make friends. Maybe it's easier for women in general.
