Maybe getting e-coli is rare, believe me I know, but when it happens to you then it doesn't feel so rare anymore. Most of my close family members rarely, if ever, eat beef now. They know chances are they won't get sick, but after seeing what happened to me none of us even want beef anymore.

Like NuclearNed said, you can get e-coli from a steak, and yes it's rare. We believe I got it from a hamburger eaten at a fast food place. Don't count on them always following "safe handling" instructions.

We aren't completely paranoid. We still eat out, just not beef. Everyone else enjoy your beef because if I hadn't been sick I'd probably still be eating it.

My neighbor got salmonella from a breakfast sandwich at Burger King. He was young at the time so he spent many days in the hospital. Does that mean I'll never eat from Burger King again?

So you do eat poultry? Aren't you afraid of salmonella. Or how about pork? Aren't you afraid of trichinosis?

I usually order rare, b/c inevitably they overcook it slightly and it comes out medium-rare. Either way, I win

Just as long as it's not still cold in the middle. So extremely rare for me. Had one of my steaks still frozen in the middle a few times. Kinda tough to chew on...
