A few years ago, my wife got e-coli from beef, suffered incredibly, nearly died, and now I'm extremely paranoid about undercooked cow.

Usually those infections come from hamburger. ALWAYS cook hamburger well. You could get it from sirlion, rump roast, etc too. Getting it from deep tissue meat (ie- ribeye, tenderloin, etc) is unheard of. You get e-coli from meat being contaminated with fecal material from the cow. If you think about it, meats that come from the rear of the cow are going to be most at risk of infecting you. Cook your "butt meat" well and you're safe. :)

Hello, e-coli girl here.

Saulbadguy, you're a jerk.:|

Maybe getting e-coli is rare, believe me I know, but when it happens to you then it doesn't feel so rare anymore. Most of my close family members rarely, if ever, eat beef now. They know chances are they won't get sick, but after seeing what happened to me none of us even want beef anymore.

Like NuclearNed said, you can get e-coli from a steak, and yes it's rare. We believe I got it from a hamburger eaten at a fast food place. Don't count on them always following "safe handling" instructions.

We aren't completely paranoid. We still eat out, just not beef. Everyone else enjoy your beef because if I hadn't been sick I'd probably still be eating it.

I tried really hard to like steak, it just doesn't do anything for me I guess. I love burgers, though. :D

You cannot get E-coli from a medium rare - medium steak. The bacteria cannot penetrate the meat.

Ground beef must be cooked all the way through because every part of it has been exposed all the way through. Steak, on the other hand, has not. Only the surface must reach the ideal temp of 160F (and it does so in seconds on a grill).

You're wasting good meat for nothing.

Actually, you're wrong (trust me, I know more about e-coli than the CDC). While in theory you are correct, there have been cases where people have gotten e-coli from fully cooked steaks. The bacteria was introduced to the cool interior of the steak by punctures made by forks, knives, etc. during cooking.

If you are puncturing the steak with forks and knives while cooking, you are cooking it in entirely the wrong way.
