Neither disorder exists.

It's a convenient excuse by some for their laziness and inattentiveness. Of course it upsets them when you say this. Who wants to admit that they are just plain lazy? It's much better to say you have a disorder and get people to feel sorry for you instead of being disgusted by your lack of willpower.

Stupidity and misinformation like this is a far greater problem than ADHD.

There are brain scans out there which do show a physical difference in brain chemistry between a control group and those diagnosed with ADHD. In true and valid instances of the condition there is a very real and measurable difference in brain chemistry/activity.

My brother was diagnoses as ADD back in the day, but my parents never got him onto prescription drugs. He learned how to deal with it for the most part, but when he got to college it was just too much for him and he started to take Adderall which helped him tremendously.

Yes, without a doubt many people just attempt to get diagnosed to get their hands on some amphetamine. Just because, though, some people do fake it does not mean the condition itself is not real.

Right......... Unless you are a pharmacist or a doctor, you'll be more believable. There are tests that prove a chemical imbalance or lack that causes ADHD.

Plus, ADHD has nothing to do with laziness. It makes you hard to focus on something or pay attention to something.

Then doctors should perform brain scans to properly diagnose rather than handing out aderall or ritalin like candy.

Taking ritalin when you dont have ADHD apparently makes you ridiculously productive.

In high school my best friend had ADHD, and it was apparent, he couldn't concentrate at all in class off his meds.

His mom said I was a text book example of ADD. I never was able to complete any homework through out high school. Things as simple as going to the bathroom would make me completely forget what I was doing.

I finally started taking medication 3 years into the Air Force, and it has helped me a ton. Whether its psychological, and I am helping myself by thinking the medications are, or they really work is debatable. I have Adult ADD. No hyperactivity, just attention deficit.

I believe its real.

People who believe that something doesn't exist just because they never experienced it... Well.. I hate them. Ignorant, arrogant, and just a waste of space. You don't have ADD? Awesome - good for you. I've gotten into car accidents because my mom didn't believe that ADD existed and pulled me off of my meds. I've failed classes... I've lost jobs. The distinction between ADD and just having a short attention span is that your lack of attention affects your day to day life. Most people can just say "FOCUS" and read a book. When I try words on the page literally move around - my focus shifts to the air conditioning noise. I close my eyes and I see loud explosions of color. It's all due to a hyper active cerebral cortex - brain waves and MRIs show that people who have ADD have different brains. I'm not a shrink or doctor, I don't understand the complete science of it all. I do know that ritalin has changed my life for the better and that ADD does exist.

I never had a doctor test me for adhd or taken any drugs. I have never done any homework at all through high school, I barely passed HS by taking like 8 classes/semester on 4th year. Failed community college after 2 years, didn't do homework. I want to learn different subjects, I just can't get around to do homework. I did very well in classes that had only in-class hands on learning.
I don't think my mental abilities are lacking, I just think the way I grew up w/out father, etc affected my motivation. Maybe I'm just a lazy ass, maybe I have adhd, either way I screwed up most of my classes (while cs101/comp classes were extremely easy because all work was done in class)

I missed my first scheduled appointment with my doc for checking my ADD, because I wasn't at work having my calendar remind me, the notes I had made where forgotten about etc.

Freedom says it well. It can effect so much.

I never saw a doctor and I knew I had ADHD. It's really easy to tell when you're in college. I got distracted so easily when I'm trying to study or read a book, even when I'm in the library. My mind just goes off and I start daydreaming about random crap. Either that, I doze off.

as for my part, 80% of things i "had" to school (years ago) bored me.

Sry....algebra NEVER fascinated me, history i hated, latin i hated, french i hated.

The only things i got kind of a kick out was physics (although the stuff we had was WAY below my interests....eg was sitting at home building radios w/ my electronics kit....and in physics we learned BASICCS like "what is a circuit" or "what meterials are conductive".

Biology i also liked.

Too bad at those times there were NO COMPUTER classes yet, so only after school it kind of "dawned" on me that something like algebra also has a meaning/sense BEYOND the schoolbook.....eg. if when i got a computer i started to write BASIC programs where i could actually APPLY a algebraic formula....etc..etc....but this was already some years after i left school.

Also..basically everything i was REALLY interested outside school - the school did not even cover...eg. i was a huge astronomy-buff.

So....i had rather AVERAGE grades and in Latin/Math often BAD grades....and one day some doctor somehow "decided" i had which (i guess) is the today's equivalent of ADHD or ADD - because THEIR logic is "ok..this guy is intelligent, but he does not do too well in school" <--- ERGO, something must be wrong with him :)

Sry....i say BS...i i rather tend to criticize the school-system and ask myself why do i have learn stuff i dislike/hate...and/or why dont special interests get more support ? If i am into astronomy...well WTF do i need to learn...uhm...1432 History of Europe ? Etc..etc.

Well, ok, you have those choices later, but at least not in the early stages in school....and i was also way too immature to "see" that picture...

But whether this qualifies for any sort of "mental disorder"..is another question :)

I still dont "trust" or belive many psychiatric "thesis"...eg. all the ADHD/ADD stuff....this goes even further....like i've experienced people who thought that there must be something wrong with young boys (say 10ish - 15ish) who like to play outside, like to make camp-fires or playing with firecrackers (like i did :) ....as opposed to the one who likes to stay inside and is afraid of "insect bites" and is a mama's baby :) So...does this make the first kind of boy having some "disorder" ??? I say this is all BS :)

I tend to agree with this. Sure, there are likely people out there who have extremely short attention spans and can't help it, but not the millions that are taking drugs for it.
