Just brush your teeth as often as you can (especially after you eat). And forget about mixing Listerine with water. Take it straight up like a man. If you're tough enough you don't even to spit it back out, chug it down.

Hah, yeah, chug it down and let it play "who's the stronger acid" with your stomach and intestines....

Hmmm...can't believe littlelilith got away scott free with the "gag reflex" comment. My faith in off topic posters has been shattered. :)

<< Plus, when I floss, there is a pretty intense smell between the teeth. >>

There are two reasons for this: you don't floss regularly enough to get food particles out before they begin to decompose, you have a few cavities (tooth decay), or both.

I had a similar problem, I have pretty good oral hygiene (brush, floss, gargle) and all so I didn't think it was a cavity, plus the tooth wasn't sensitive or anything. I went to the dentist and he found the tooth had started decaying below the gum line and it was on the verge of abscess. He also found two other cavities located between my teeth.

I had the bad tooth pulled, he wanted to crown it (root canal) but I didn't have the $700. The other two were drilled and filled plus the I got a good cleaning which I hadn't had in two years (complete with that gum line scraping everyone loves).

I tell ya, my breath is 200% better. I didn't realize my breath was going sour because it happened very gradually. It wasn't like I woke up one morning and WOW!

Moral of the story...go to the dentist soon.

<< so these tongue scrapers >>

They're available from pharmacies and department stores around here. I just use my toothbrush and scrub my tongue, gags the heck out of me but it is worth it to break up that slimy crud that builds up back there.

Well, I don't think it is a cavity, because I just went to the dentist 6 months ago (going again this month), but I haven't been flossing regularly like I should. It's weird though, because the only tooth that really smells bad is the crown where I had a root canal done. Inbetween the tooth on each side is horrible smelling, but the others don't smell as bad.
