How do you keep a smartphone cool?

I can't play any heavy games on my galaxy s5 for more than 2 to 5 minutes before the framerate tanks to like 5 fps. Even 2D games like boom beach will eventually get slowed down.

It seems nobody has ever brought this issue to light because nobody sees mobile gaming as something important, it's like "if you wanna game just use your PC" but gaming on the smartphone is just much more immersive for reasons I won't go into right now.

There are of course many "tech articles" that tell you how to cool your phone, they go like this: "If you want to keep your smartphone cool it's very simple! Just cut down on browsing and don't play any games cause that's what heats it up. Now please click some more for my ad revenue." That's like someone asking you how to prevent his car from running out of fuel, and you tell him not to drive it.

It sounds like you have a defective phone to me. My wife plays games on her S5 all the time and never has any complaints about the speed dropping.

Go to the North. Winter is coming.

(where winter is actually coming now is Down Under, but you get the point)

Moukawim, some of the less friendly answers are due to the fact that Apple fanboys (or flat out paid shills) create new accounts to post stuff like this once in a while. If your phone really does do what you are describing, you have a defective device and need to have it repaired or replaced. That is not normal behavior.

The KNOX counter was triggered (rooted) so I can't replace it.

Just to be sure I have a defective device, isn't there something technical to compare it to? Like benchmark graphs that show how temperatures and clock speeds change. Mine is the S5 exynos variant.

Take gloves and put in freezer;
wait 1 hour;
take gloves out of freezer;
put gloves on;
hold phone with frozen gloves and play game.
Repeat as necessary.
🙂

I have gamed on all galaxy phones and tablets and never have I experienced this issue. The only phone/device that slows down for me is my Note 4 while using my Galaxy VR headset. But, I went in knowing that this would happen as using the VR will tax the note 4 and it will overheat. My S5 never heated up to the point of slowing it down. And I game heavily on all my devices. So, that said, either you are playing in a very hot place to begin with, your device is running a ROM that is wonky or it is defective.

I'm pretty sure there's plenty of shilling, paid and unpaid, going around on all sides.

@OP
You need to test a stock ROM before coming to any conclusions. It's definitely not the case for most GS5 users so it's either your software or your hardware that's the issue.

Mine is exynos, so there's nothing but stock roms available. Custom roms only exist for snapdragon chips.

You know, that might actually be a possibility. I'm pretty sure everyone here gave their comments based on the assumption it was the Snapdragon model.

Do other people with the Exynos model on XDA have similar issues? You've rooted so XDA shouldn't be unfamiliar. The users there would be better able to tell you what you need to know.

I can play boom beach on my Galaxy Nexus (a 4 year old phone, mind you). It sounds like you have stuff running in the background that is hogging resources.

If it's dropping to 5FPS then even the UI wouldn't be smooth. It's not a heat issue. Try a factory reset.
