How do you keep 50+ GB of stuff organized?

Best way is to keep things organized proactively. Have specific folders for every kind of file. Keep all your downloaded files in one folder while all your .zip files go into another folder etc. That way stuff isn't scattered everywhere.

I sort all my music by Genre, then I organize the Genre folders by Artist.

Video's aren't quite as organized.

I've got folders for all of the main things I have. There's a folder for music, movies, HTML and web development stuff, school stuff, images, downloaded files (install files, mostly), etc. Then I've got subfolders in each main folder (for example, in my downloaded files directory, there's subdivisions for things related to the Internet (AIM, etc.), Multimedia (Quicktime, etc.), etc.). Inside each of those subdivisions is another folder with the actual file in it. So, if I download the newest version of Winamp, it goes into D:/Downloads/Multimedia/Winamp/ I've been doing this for the last few years and it works a LOT better than just scattering files all around the place.

I just keep all songs in /music, I download them, rename them (artist - song name.mp3), strip id3 tags, and stick them in /music. /music is a 13GB hard drive, and I just do a simple cp -pR to mirror them on my 60GB main drive, so if either drive fails, the mp3s are on one of them.

BTW, I have about 1800 mp3's, no where near 50+GB but a good ~9GB.

you can sort them first into softcore and hardcore.

then within those can be any number of ways; blonde/brunette. tall/short. celebrity/non-celeb. the possibilities are endless dude.

This is some of it. Most of that is already organized, though.

The unorganized music is the hardest part, and making sure all the videos are labelled correctly and complete.

is "endless dude" supposed to be a category?

burn movies to cd/dvd, unless you watch them repeatedly. i put my music into category, then folder of artist.

No, no, no. You have to sort it by genre. What's going on in the video, for example....

Oh, um.

Anyway, I sort my stuff into folders like "Games", "Applications", and "Images". Music is sorted by artist then album.

Now, /home/chaotic42 is much, much less organized.

I'm the exact opposite, I dump all of my mp3's into one directory (all named correctly though - that is important), but my home directory is usually pretty clean. I'm in the middle of doing a backup as we speak, just need to burn this stuff to cd..

death@two ~ % ls -1
code/
dotfiles/
images/
mp3backup/
other/
scripts/
stuff/
sw/
text/
themes/
tmp/
two.ROCKET.gz
two.code.tgz
two.dotfiles.tgz
two.etc.tgz
two.images.tgz
two.other.tgz
two.scripts.tgz
two.sw.tgz
two.text.tgz
two.themes.tgz
two.var.tgz
two.video.tar
video/

(two is the hostname)
edit: heh, I suppose you see that in the prompt :p

My break down example....

Music
Music Archvie (CD backups)
Metal
Gun n Roses
Downloaded
Electronic
Paul Oakenfold

Then, at the root are other folders. One is Games, broken down to game name for updates, cheats etc. Another is Organized, then broken down to type. Such as Financial (With Quicken etc). Within Organized is also videos, broken down to Anime, Racing, Funny, Movie.

Just think in directories. Look at how Windows installs stuff. Winnt - System etc etc. Ok, thats a bad example... But you get the idea.....

C (Incoming folder): New music, workspace
D (60GB): New music, etc not backed up
E (70/80GB): Music already backed up
F (10/80GB): Games/Programs/Drivers/All misc not backed up

Music is sorted only by albums. Songs are generally in my favorite format

<artist> - <track #> - <song title>
