no one of the poor kids was bruising your poor mom.

I see you have grasped the situation precisely. Proust! I applaud you.

Also, do your friend's lights shine onto the neighbor's property or just onto his own? He should aim them better if they're shining onto the old guy's property.

There is probably 30-50' between there properties. It's normal landscapign lights and downward firing floods.

This is not a case where someone is shining lights into another's home.

are the floods ALWAYS on or are they like a motion light

if they were always on i would prob bitch about that as well

here we go...little atot nerds looking into a story far too much. It's fairly common to have a property lit at night around here, but we aren't hillbillies.

He called his lights security lights so more than likely a very dim light until motion happens and then they light up. I have similar ones at my place for the driveway and rear of the home.

His neighborhood has larger properties not the typical ghetto type where you can touch your neighbors house from yours. I think they are 1/2 acres.

Why even have street lights then in a neighborhood?

well thats not common around here and just sounds like a waste of power. a Off/On Motion type security light i have no issues with

if they are motion lights and still end up being on all the time i suggest figureing out what keeps setting them off and check how they are aimed

This statement is very ambiguous. You're just mad because you fail at storytelling. :p

Give him a break. When he was young he was one of those poor kids that got bused with his 8 other brothers and sisters to another neighborhood.

Because of this second use of the buses, "taking the short bus" and other phrases to that effect have become pejorative slang terms used to imply that the subject is mentally challenged (or simply stupid). Some of these terms include but are not necessarily limited to the following: "retard carts," "syndrome trucks", "tard carts", "window lickers", "sped sleds", "sped-ex", "retard rockets", "the Magic School Bus", and "the magic wagon." Also the term "off the short bus" is used, as in, "Where'd they recruit you, off the short bus?"

Everyone is missing the point: It's your friends property and it isn't against the law to have the lights on. Give the old guy a few more warnings and then call the police if it continues. If it escalates to that, he may want to get cameras.

If the farmer is turning off his own lights, then friend has no recourse and who the F cares??
If the farmer is turning off friend's lights.... camera, catch him in the act, phone police, trespassing charges.

I agree with the old guy, light pollution, he should shoot the neighbors lights out next time.

if the lights are shining on the neighbors house then your friend should re-aim them. i would not be happy about that either. if not, then just tell the guy to get better shades.

I'd be pretty pissed if the neighbor had floodlights aimed at my property all night. I moved out of the city into the country to get away from things like that. Lights on a motion detector are just fine, but "security lights?" Sounds like your friend is one of those paranoid people.

Not much he can do unless he convinces him to stop or escalates. The only thing that comes to mind is to exchange one security measure for another. Ditch the lights and use another method which doesn't bother that guy.

At the same time, there probably are laws against flooding someone's window with unwanted light.

Obviously the old man shouldn't be taking or unscrewing the OP's friend's lights, but the friend might at least double check how they're aimed or if he can shade/deflect them somehow. If you're someone who's sensitive to light when you're trying to sleep, it really can be a living hell. Also, most blackout curtains I've seen are hideous, one shouldn't have to invest in them just for some peaceful sleep, unless they suffer from migraines.

The options:

1) Call the police
2) Buy a gun (since Florida has really strong laws protecting people using guns to protect their property) and then call the police after it is used.
3) Put metal cages around the lights and then electrify the cages.

I agree with you Gooberlx2.

It is also not uncommon for neighbours to have disputes that they settle by compromising.

Perhaps the OP's friend could have the floodlights on a motion sensor, so they are not on all the time, and the landscape lighting could be on a timer to shut them off after 11. The old guy may appreciate that he will have his darkness and the OP's friend can have his security lights when he needs them (ie. when something is moving outside his house).

nah, you're post is horribly worded. write better.

I still "got it" though. Of course, I had to assume that your friend wasn't bitching about his neighbor taking down his own lights. b/c that would have been a bandwidth-wasting post.
