How do you handle a neighbor like this?

Long story short...guy and his wife are from a farm somewhere, moved to florida at his kids request as he is getting old and lived miles from anyone.

They live in a nicer neighborhood that has decent sized lots. There is no HOA as far as I know.

A friend now has them living next door. He said they were what he thought would be great neighbors except...

the guy keeps turning off his security lights (takes/undoes the bulbs) around his side of the house as well as his landscaping lighting. He has caught him doing this, but the guy won't stop saying lights are not for the night . Supposedly after around 9pm this guy has absolutely no lights on at all...it's pitch black there as it's sort of between street lights.

He now feels this guy is a bit unstable and may be dangerous / vindictive. I don't know what to tell him to do...Personally I'd probably be arrested over this.

He doesn't want to escalate, but I don't see any other way. I told him he should at least pay to have a light pole put up by the city at that end of his property. They will do it here for about $40 every couple months for the power. They sort of block it from other property with a steel panel, but it still lets light through. He said his neighbor would freak, I said let him. He is mostly worried about his animals home during the day.

Is he taking out the neighbors lights or just his own?

If it's just his own, what's the problem? He doesn't wanna pay for the power.

Talk to the old guys kids and let the handle it?

Is there an HOA?

If so, bring it up to them.

If he's taking out his own lights, whats the big deal?

I believe he's taking out his neighbors lights.

Ahh, then I suggest a Louisville Slugger approach. Or call the cops.

The OP's post is horribly worded.

If it's the guy's own lights tell your friend to mind his own freakin' business. If it's your friend's lights then tell him to get some razor wire and/or a couple pit bulls.

And has he tried talking to the guy??

Tell him to stay the hell off the property and leave the lights alone. FSet up cameras. If it continues, call the police and file a report.

I had the electric company come out and take down the security light that the previous owners were leasing from the electric company when we moved out to the country. I like it to be pitch black outside at night. I gave them two weeks notice before I moved there and it still took them over a week after I moved (and several complaints) to bother coming out to disconnect the damned thing. It pissed me off. I can understand the old guy's feelings on the subject, but he has no business messing with his neighbors' property. His kids (that pushed him to move to the suburbs) should get him some good window shades so that outside light doesn't leak in through all the windows and disturb his sleep. The neighbor might consider suggesting it to the old fellow.

Also, do your friend's lights shine onto the neighbor's property or just onto his own? He should aim them better if they're shining onto the old guy's property.
