How do you get rid of kittens

Me and my wife found a stray mewing at our door. We both wanted a cat so we figured what the heck lets save this one. Long story short the cat was pregant and a month or so later we had 5 kittens as well. We simply don't have the room for 6 cats in our one bedroom appartment, so we went about looking for homes for them.

All of our friends have all the animals they want so no go there. Called all the animal shelters within a 2.5 hour drive radius and the tell us they are full. They only one who said they had a waiting list said it was 1 year. I told them that this was unacceptable because we just don't have the room for 6 full grown cats (once they grow up), and the lady told me, "You could always drop them off out in the country" I really can't believe that someone would suggest that, but I guess there is something of an overcrowding of cats here.

So anyone have any ideas?

You need to find a no kill animal rescue group in your area to give them to. You might want to go up to a PetSmart if you have one in your area on Saturday when they are doing adoptions and talk to some of the people there.

Didn't know petSmart did that, but we did call all the animal rescue places they are apparently full to capasity. Even friends of strays isn't being to friendly to strays these days.

Can you fill a bathtub with water? j/k

Finding a no kill animal shelter sounds like best option, CraigsList might help to find some owners.

Talk to your vet (if you have one for your cat, if not, try to find one). They usually will know where you can send the kittens, and if not they may be able to help you place ads in local publications to find good homes for the kittens.

Post an add in the classifieds, and put up fliers at your local pet stores, grocery stores, etc... make it clear that these need to go to a good home or they will end up in a shelter where they will likely be killed...

Stand in front of a pet store and give them away. Many pet stores allow you to do that. I see people nearly every week giving away puppies or kittens in front of our local Petco.

And, yeah, classifieds work too.

DO NOT ABANDON THEM in the country or anywhere. Stray cats kill native wildlife.

Just take them to the county or municipal animal control. Lord knows there are too many cats anyway.

The will NOT take them. They say they are too full. I can't even give them to a kill shelter because they are also full. Sadly if i can't manage to give them away I may be left with the leave them for the Gators solution (I live in florida, and would never do that. I will probably have to be the "cat" guy if I can't manage to give them away).

Adopted two cats. One from the SPCA, and the other from PetsMart. The later was a neglected cat, but Petsmart got him healthy. He enjoys a leisurely house life now. :)
