How do you get health care?

I was having a discussion with a friend about this... how do most people get health care? It's so expensive now that it's almost impossible to go if you don't have health insurance and even then you still might be out hundreds of dollars if you have a high deductible.

I have health insurance through my work, but it's a semi-high deductible ($1500). Luckily I'm almost never sick and haven't had to use it yet. What other option are there out there for people? One friend mentioned going to the health departments clinics, which is supposed to be really cheap.

What do you guys do?

you do realise that you pay for your health insurance so its actually less affordable, in aggregate, going through insurance than simply saving the money yourself.

At this point, yes I might be able to save the money that my work is putting into my health insurance, but I'm not willing to chance it. I got into a car accident 4 years ago and the medical bills were in the $20-30k range. Between my car insurance and health insurance I was out MAYBE $500 total. Accidents happen, that is when health insurance comes in handy.

I goto school health center.
I was also told by people here if you are sick, you can roll into the ER without any insurance and get treatment without payment. Of course I'm not in Canada.

All I need to pay is my $10.00 co-pay Ins covers the rest example
having surgery next Wed asked if there was a % I need to pay
just to make certain and was told just my co-pay.

Work.

10 dollar co-pay for doctor visits, 10 dollar co-pay for perscription drugs, 80/20% for eveything else with a maximum 1500 out of pocket.

Pretty dog-gone sweet really.

and what have you paid in premiums? since they have people to pay and still come out with a profit you're on the losing end of that equation

PPO? I always though it was called E (employer) PO. Anyway, I am covered on my mom's insurance (she works in a hospital) for another 2 years (until I am 25).

My wife works for a hospital and they cover everything 100%, except the $10 copays to the doctor. It's nice now that we are having our first child. The dental and vision plans suck though, so overall I think it's a marginal plan. Best plan I ever had was with Aetna, they had very solid coverage all the way around and low monthly premiums. If I have a choice of jobs when I graduate and one uses Aetna health care, I will strongly consider that job over the other.

you for got to put 'I AM CANADIAN" as an option. I obviously pay into my health care, I'm Canadian. But for prescriptions and stuff I also have Manulife Benefits I pay into at work. Health, Life Insurance and Dental.

I always here people say "Bah, health insurance is too expensive. I can just pay for my doctor out of my own pocket."

Then they get a broken neck in a car accident or come down with super-aggressive cancer. Let's see your pocketbook handle THAT.

WHO'S THE DUMBASS NOW, HUH?!?! 😀

Two most common ones:

HMO = Health Maintenance Organization.
PPO = Preferred Provider Organization
