I was having a discussion with a friend about this... how do most people get health care? It's so expensive now that it's almost impossible to go if you don't have health insurance and even then you still might be out hundreds of dollars if you have a high deductible.

I have health insurance through my work, but it's a high deductible. Luckily I'm almost never sick and haven't had to use it yet. What other option are there out there for people? One friend mentioned going to the health departments clinics, which is supposed to be really cheap.

What do you guys do?

you do realise that you pay for your health insurance so its actually less affordable, in aggregate, going through insurance than simply saving the money yourself.

It is if you, by some miracle, never get sick or have to go to the ER.
If you ever require major surgery or have a long-term illness, I guarantee you that any money you saved up will not be enough.
You can't answer for the unknown, and saying that you'll NEVER face a situation where you have high medical expenses is like saying you'll NEVER lose at the roulette table.

As long as insurers are making money, it has to be cheaper for people to, on average, use less than they pay. You just have to hope that you aren't the one who has that car accident that requires a quarter million dollars in medical bills. But that isn't a miracle, that is the majority of people. Simple math dictates that it must be true.
