How do you feel about the new eBay?

I'm just starting to sell on eBay for the first time and am concerned about the new direction they're taking as outlined in this article by the NYTimes.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07...ref=slogin&oref=slogin

I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time now since eBay is clearly moving away from the private auction hosting business and trying to stick it to the little guy in favor of large resellers.

I'm hoping some entrepreneur with better coding skills than myself takes up the challenge of competing with eBay and providing a new home for the masses while leaving eBay to the fate of their new business model.

Ebay is still a good place to move items that are fit to sell. Junk can go to CL.

To build a better ebay is not really about coding....the code base is relatively non-complex. It's getting yourself market share and critical mass.

Im kinda surprised Yahoo axed their auction site. With the way they're starving for cash, they could have advertised it and taken some share away from ebay. Everyone knows that people are looking to move from ebay, but no one's stepping up to the plate.

I believe Amazon picked up a fair amount of business over the last few years. The problem there is its difficult to list a new item (as in you need to find it in Amazon's database before you can list it).

uBid seems to be doing ok as well, and I think Best Buy even has an auction site now.

i feel the same way about ebay now that i have for the past 5 years or so, its a shithole and isnt worth useing

The problem with ubid and amazon is that it isnt very user friendly for small time sellers. Sure you can sell books and stuff, but you need a business reference to get started at Ubid, and if Amazon doesnt sell what youre selling (old stuff, quirky stuff, niche stuff) you wont be able to sell it. Plus you have to compete with Amazon's free shipping and outstanding service. Yahoo had the closest thing to ebay going, just add lower fees (which they could do easily since they have multiple revenue sources), link their search and shopping to their auction site, and wham, instant ebay killer.

Having used yahoo auctions as a seller, it was the most worthless piece of shit ever.

The buy.com deal for eBay is fucking retarded.

Wigix.com might be really good when it gets out of beta; it's a great system they've set up. All web 2.0-y.

web 2.0 is now synonymous with overrated bullshit.

indeed. and my mother has a prime account, so i get everything through that and pay her back and get all my stuff in no time.

Ebay has gotten so corrupt over the years it's ridiculous. I remember when I first start using it, and how great it was. Shipping prices where at decent rates because people didn't have to compensate for high ebay fees. Most sellers were individuals, not company's selling 500 of the same product. And now every year it is steadily getting worse. I still like to go there though, to find stuff that you just can't really find anywhere else.

I really wish someone could start the "ebay killer" but it's going to be hard. Even if they have low fees, it's going to be hard to get people away from ebay, since it's just as much of a household name as google.

Ebay isn't what it used to be.

However, I have stuff to sell, and there happens to be a huge group of easy-to-find customers at ebay. That's what matters. No, it isn't as easy or as cheap as it used to be, and paypal is a huge cesspool. But when I compare that to the cost of finding buyers elsewhere, there's still a place for ebay.

I rather like Amazon right now. But I've heard more horror stories about amazon than I have about ebay - maybe I just happen to know the wrong people, but it makes me wonder.
