short term goals keep me going. i take it one week at a time. plans for the weekend get me through the weekdays. i plan on retiring early, say in 25-30 years. so that's a small consolation as well.

plus it also helps to have some money socked away, so that in case something or someone at work really drives me nuts, i can quit without worrying about where my next meal is going to come from.

I've been doing the 8-5 thing for about four years now, and I don't know how I can last another 35 or so. The drag just kills you. I have aspirations to start my own business, but getting the money to do so has been tough. The business I want to start would probably only make about what I make a year working, or a bit more, but it is something I enjoy a lot. I need to win the lottery though.

I've been doing 8-4 for 5.5 years + now, and... like some of the other people who have responded, just view work as a means to an end. Work = $ = survival. I'm not in the type of profession where I can thoroughly enjoy myself. I see it as a bonus if a few people I work with are actually good people, but that is a whooole other topic entirely.

The office sucks... I am here right now :), but when I get home @ 4:30 or so, I still have the whole night to spend doing whatever I want, which usually consists of messing with the compu for a few hours or watching something on the tube with my wife.

If I could go back, I wouldn't change a thing. I went through 4 years of university to get to where I am right now, in this chair. It was that, or factory work, which... right now doesn't seem that bad. I've done both and can handle both. Office work is a lot more people-oriented which can be as equally a pain in the ass as, say, your machine breaking down on the line or running 500 repetitive movements per day.

Bottom line is... I have a mortgage to pay, and this is how I do it. :) yep, playin around on the forums. HAHAHAH kidding. i work a bit.

That's why it's time to end the sun!

Life is more than just your job. Or at least it should be. Though many of us end up spending the majority of our time at work, do you use the rest of the day thinking about your job? I?m a 9-to-5?er in the corporate world and as soon as I leave my cubicle I totally shut off thinking about my job. My job does not define me. My job enables me to live my lifestyle and that's it.

It would be nice to have that kind of job security.

Also it would be nice to work only 9-5.

as in XX = 30, YY = 35, ZZ = 65 ;) you can have variable names of more than 1 char.

it's pretty hard not to love college more than a 9-5! :) you just have to enjoy it very thoroughly while you can. believe me, if it were a possibility, i would still be somewhere in the midst of fast food containers, pizza boxes, empty beers and (not for long) empty bongs, playing 4-man wrestling on an N64. Or, having great parties and pickin up hotties!! That's how I met my wife! She came to one of our parties! Ah, school days. wow.

I coudln't. That's why I'm planning on being a non-private practice doctor, and will probably continue to do ambulance ride along well into my career. The things you see as an EMT create the hugest rush. :)

If you don't want 9-5 try rotating shifts, this way it's a pain to plan out anything in the future.

Everyone does 9-5.. that's why it sucks getting off at 5 with everyone else. Takes 45 mins to drive 5 miles!

I have done the 9-5 for a year now. I like because I have a set schedule, unlike my g/f who is a waitress and has a crazy schedule every week.

Well, that was true of college, but again, not for grad school. I'm either in the lab or at a conference over spring break. Over the summer, I try to only work 9-5, which is a huge relief from the rest of the year. Christmas time I spend with my family from Christmas until New Year's, but then I'm back in the lab after that along with everyone else. Even if I had a normal job, I'd take vacation days then anyway, to spend with my fam and my fiancee.

I will admit that as a grad student I have a lot more liberty in when I work even if the amount of work is much higher. i.e. If I want to take several hours off one day (except for when lecture is scheduled) I can, it just means putting in that time afterward.

Well, you realized this, now find income outside of work.

I do fixer-uppers that Ilive in and move out of every 2 years.

I also do the stock market (with options).

I'll be done with my employer after about 15 years.

I work about 35 hours a week and take 12 credits at SUNY Stony Brook. Already feel cynical about life at 18.

I'll be happy when I find a network admin position (which won't happen for probably 40 years if not ever) and can surf the net, and get paid to do it.
