How do you deal with needy people at work?

I always try to be nice and do what I can for people. I work in a high stress environment, so a lot of times that is letting someone vent about a shitty customer or the stupid things that corporate does. I'm also pretty good with the program we use for billing and such, so its not uncommon for people to ask for advice on how to do something. I always do what I can since I do like to help.

BUT....but there are a few people that seem to thrive on pestering others. These are the kind of people that always want to complain about everything in their lives. The only time the even hint at smiling is when they are complaining. They will even interrupt other people's conversations to start complaining. These are almost always the same people that always need help using the computer. We all use the same program, every single day. But these people will interrupt whatever you are doing because they need immediate help. But the thing they need help with is something simple and they just didn't want to figure it out for themselves. They also didn't want to take the time of using the tools they have to figure it out. Much easier to make it someone else's problem.

How do you deal with these kinds of people? Of course I avoid them at all costs, but since they don't wait for you to start a conversation, its not an easy thing to do. Telling them to STFU isn't an option since that will result in a trip to HR.

It's easy don't let them see you as an ear to complain to, every time they complain about something change the conversation to be a complaint of your own, then they will stop complaining at you as they wont want to hear you complain! Turn the tables on them.

Easy, start smoking, you will spend most of your workday outside during your frequent smoke breaks (according to AT P&N) and the tobacco smoke will act like insect repellent to the needy person (not to mention mosquitoes).

BAh...if they can't do their jobs, tell them to go see their boss. Maybe they need a bit of retraining, maybe they just need to be replaced.

If everyone has the same basic job, (call center) and has the same basic job requirements, is it your job to continually stop what you're doing and help them do their job? Maybe you need to request an added bit of pay for being a trainer?

I tell them I'm busy and walk away without even looking at them. To those that actually contribute and work hard/skilled, I go out of my way to help them.
