The farmer's market around me has whole watermellons for 19 cents a pound. The cut up ones are 49 cents a pound. I dunno how to pick out a watermellon if I can't see the insides though. DO you tap it like a cantalope ? Any advice on picking out a good watermellon ?

thanks

1) Make sure there aren't any wierd discolorations or large dark, soft spots. This is to make sure it hasn't started going bad yet.

2) When you tap it, there should be a deep, resonating sound. If it sounds "flat" then it isn't ripe enough.

It isn't an exact science and your mileage using my technique may vary.

Generally, the heavier and greener they are, the jucier they are. I've never had good luck with thumping.

1)hold it about shoulder height in outstreched arms
2)drop it
3)if it breaks find start again with a new one. If it doesnt, u have yourself a watermelon
