Oh, did I fail to mention that people are half evolved APES? WTF do you expect to happen? Peace and harmony for all? Get the fuck out of here. People bitch about being poor? As in, can't afford college, housing, or cable TV?
Shit, people die by the thousands due to genocide and magical religious book motivated killings. This is the planet of the apes, literally. Chaos is to be fully expected for at least the next 1,000 years.

I've got it:

We take away all benefits etc from the poor.
They turn to crime to get money, food, clothing.
Poor are being violent, therefore the non-poor can blast away.
No more poor!!!!

Shock and horror as nehalem posts yet another news story showing a woman in a bad light!

Were you raped by your mother and sister or something?

This made me laugh.

The story really did happen, and that is the woman's life. The fact that he brought up the story as an example of poor people and the choices they make had nothing to do with her gender. You believe her choices are bad, and the fact that he posted the link is him putting her in a bad light, instead of his purpose.

lol, he was not looking down on her for being her.

Its very telling on how utterly clueless you are that you think people don't want to get out of poverty.

Of course they don't want to get out of poverty.

Give a poor person $5 million and they'll be upset because they'll have to pay for things with their own money.

They much prefer living in dogshit towns with high crimerates because then someone else is paying for their foodstamps.

Have you not seen nehalem's posts before? It's certainly no coincidence that the person in the story he posted was female.

the poor will stay poor even if we give them a bucket of $.
think lottery winners. A majority of them become bankrupt within 5 yrs.

Better education?
schools in the inner city are underfunded.
NYC has a novel way of fixing this education inequality. Instead of throwing $ at underperforming schools, bus some kids at random to better schools.

And if that school is still underperforming over the years, it will have less and less kids to the point the school will close because it doesn't have enuf kids.

but that's just for kids. How about the poor adults? Are they a lost cause?

anyway, any other ideas of changing the mindset of the poor so they want to lift themselves out of poverty?
An end to poverty has to come from the poor themselves as no amount of money thrown at them will initiate a change. It must come from within. I don't think schools are underfunded but. instead, resources are squandered or stolen or broken.

That's because you skipped over the key part (as usual) which is "understand what it takes to actually get out of poverty."

Whining at the man to bail you out or expecting some lameass, ultra-dumb aspect of street/hick/ghetto/whatever subculture to be your ticket out doesn't actually count.

I'm pretty new to this section of Anandtech so no I have not. Having said that, it still seems like an ad hominem reaction to this post.

You are implying that any time he brings up a woman that in a bad situation even if that situation is caused by her, its to make her look bad.

nehalem is one of the resident mysognostics and no subject is deemed too obtuse for him to shoehorn in some survey or story that blame women for... well, just about anything really.

They simply need to work harder. Put in more hours. Take a little less vacation time lounging about. A little less time breeding like rabbits and a little more time devoting themselves to the stock holders. If you work like a dog and sacrifice for the company enough years you will definitely possibly be rewarded someday. :) Just don't blow it like most people and get fired at the 24 year and 6 months mark when your company pension pays out at year 25 as happens with so many these days.

I live in one of the poorest counties in NY. Many of the poor people I know probably work harder 5 or 6 days a week than you might have ever worked in a single day in your life. I've known farmer's kids who were up milking cows at 4am before going to school. After school, they went back home and had more farm chores. After graduating from high school (a huge achievement for them), they went right back to work on the farm. For many of the kids in a poor area, escaping the poverty is incredibly difficult. There's no one telling them "leave and never come back."

That's a pretty bold statement. Do you realize when I was getting my business off the ground I would easily put in 12 to 16 hours a day? I am glad some of the poor people you know are hard workers. Most of the ones I know are lazy sacks of shit.

Explain to the poor that the country can only have a certain number of top earners before the dollar will start losing its value. Show them the statistics and they'll soon figure out that if they don't have the intelligence and resources to join the top they're better off just picking up weapons and taking out the top people so they can be replaced.

Works quite well, also gets rid of overpopulation ;)

You can just come look at a thread sometimes now and again and scratch your head over about 99% of the things posted in it more or less.

Someone else has gotten bit in the butt once, or doesn't realize they intentionally do that to screw you over long term.

Go Team, work your ass off for us so we can crew you over after a lifetime of dedication.

Nothing like having a bunch of little straight out of college HR former cheerleader types for the Engineers to oogle at and fuck the people the have been actually making products and actually improving the things engineers envision even better because they've had years of experience in manufacturing process get them a raise.

I could go on for hours but I won't.

No, I read it and your point is just as stupid with as without it. People know what it takes to get out of poverty, its called money. The problem is getting money. Wages have stagnated for decades, social services are gutted and education costs are increasing rapidly. Also with healthcare as it is, even a minor problem could cost tens of thousands.

Not every gets a spoiled childhood like you.

LOL! Classic poverty attitude. You're a perpetual child whining for complete strangers to spoil you.

Your crap little world is just now beginning to fall into the sub third world depths that only the charity of others has kept you out of until now. Itll be justice when your global economic status matches the depths of your mindset: the bottom of the heap. The world has far too many people that deserve better than you that have been kept from it by mere geography. As the world shrinks, scum like you sinks.

I've worked in corporate America with way too many overpaid middle managers with MBAs who somehow still can't spell cat or find their ass with both hands to be able to believe that every successful person earned their success and vice versa every unsuccessful person their failure.
