Yahoo News - 4 Adults 4 Kids die in wrong way crash on Taconic State Parkway

How far do you have to go to realize you're going the wrong way on a freeway - don't you notice that the signs aren't pointing the right way?

There have been a few of these in Dallas lately ( North Tollway I think ) - but 4 out of 5 I believe were drunks.

I've seen plenty of idiots going the wrong way through a one-way street. This really isn't that surprising.

Tisk tisk don't you remember your basic high school physics? Constant velocity motion is relative. Am I going forward or are all those other people in reverse. Who's to say?!?!?

Local news here confirmed it was indeed a woman driver that caused the accident. All would have been well if she just stood home and made sandwiches. :(

Hmm maybe the GPS did do a mistake! SUE THOSE BASTARDS!

Sadly, I could totally see someone suing Garmin over a mistake that causes an accident. You can sue for anything these days and get free moneys.

JESUS MAN!!!! If there were a trophy for compassion, you'd be bludgeoned to incoherence with that same trophy ..., by the winner of the award no less.

That being said, I agree with you entirely :D.

I would really like to know the situation that led to an actual head on crash. Were they approaching on a blind turn or something? bad weather? I mean, getting on the highway in the wrong direction is a feat in itself, but then to do a head on crash? anyone have any insight on what the roads are like where this happened?

For every billion kilometers driven among 33-year old women, only four fatalities occur, compared to 40 among 20-year old males, reports the Times, highlighting the advantages for women of taking out specialist women's car insurance policies.

Accident data studied by the research team also found that male drivers are at their safest between the ages of 33 and 54, with fewer than eight drivers killed per billion kilometers in this age group.

Did they recently come here from UK or a country that drives on the left side?

I'm surprised someone hasn't already gone after the US Gov't for 'not being safe' or some other bullshit.

I nearly hit someone head-on because they were going the wrong way on a divided highway (not limited access) last weekend. This highway has a wide grass median with lanes where you can make a U-turn. This guy was turning onto the highway from a parking lot, and he was 100-200 feet past the nearest U-turn lane.

I was driving in the right lane and saw that he wanted to turn onto the highway from the parking lot (presumably turn right, since that's the only way he could legally turn). Being a nice guy, I moved into the left lane so he wouldn't have to wait for me to pass to turn onto the highway. At the same time he turned left into the lane that I was moving into. I veered back into the right lane to avoid him and saw him turn into the U-turn lane in my rearview mirror. He was too impatient to drive the half mile to the next intersection where he could make a U-turn. :|

did you notice that article says "33- year old women"

while it was compared to "20 year old men" and "33-55 year old men"

no shit people in their young age drive faster and more aggressively

Most freeways have the reflectors that divide the lanes set so that if you are going the correct direction they are "white" (the normal reflection), and if you drive the wrong way they are all red. (I used to drive the wrong way down roads at night in the ambulance.)

Same as the little blue markers, they let you know where fire hydrants are, and the reflector is on the side that has the hydrant.

I have seen that. I generally try not to drive the Waaaambulance the wrong way though. Up here the reflectors get torn out by the plows.

either way,
Bad situation and it happens rather frequently. About 3 times a year by me.

Had a guy going down the wrong way of a freeway off ramp drive right at me one night. I was driving up the off ramp and noticed headlights coming at me. I pulled over and he proceeded to drive down the off ramp and turn onto the freeway going the correct direction.

The same way they get t-boned at an intersection or side-swiped in a parking lot.
Not paying attention.

Thats it. Thats the cause of 99% of traffic accidents. Somebody wasnt giving the road their undivided attention.

Yea the kid will tell the cops that it was a woman driving and they'd say case closed.
