wait so he drove down the OFFramp, ONTO the highway? Something doesn't add up here

Yep, I was heading westbound on the off ramp, he was going eastbound down the same off ramp, once he got to the freeway he made a u-turn and started driving westbound on the freeway.

Hmm maybe the GPS did do a mistake! SUE THOSE BASTARDS!

Sadly, I could totally see someone suing Garmin over a mistake that causes an accident. You can sue for anything these days and get free moneys.

Garmin has you accept an agreement every time you turn the GPS on before you can use it. It specifically states that the information is for reference purposes only.

I don't think you would get very far in court attempting to sue for something written on a warning label that you agreed to.

Local news here confirmed it was indeed a woman driver that caused the accident. All would have been well if she just stood home and made sandwiches. :(

Of course that only works for the driver of the car. The passengers in that car could still sue Garmin and the people in the other car could sue Garmin.

looking at that wreck the carnage would be way worse than even porsche girl. but seriously...5 kids in the back and you still aren't careful...something off in that gene pool. cousrse the idiots took out 3 other people which sucks.

also sucking, seems google maps lacks streetview for the area
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=...2658,0.004823&t=h&z=18

at least that bit looks like its sometimes separated by grass..sometimes not. but in any case its not a cramped road where you can easily drift lanes.

Something like this happen on 59 in Houston. The only place the person could have gotten on in reverse of traffic was about a mile away from the crash. That's all I really know about the crash, and now that I think about it, I'm going to look for an article.

My personal opinion thinks someone was trying to commit suicide.

Similar event in Houston

Diane Schuler, 36, of West Babylon called her brother, Warren Hance, as she drove home from a camping trip in Sullivan County with her two children and Hance's three daughters.

Hance, who lives in Floral Park and owns the Ford minivan, told his sister to pull over and wait for him to come pick them up, police said, but Schuler kept driving.
She entered the north-bound Taconic at Pleasantville Road just after 1 p.m. and drove south for almost two miles before smashing into an oncoming Chevy SUV carrying three people.

Everyone died except for Schuler's 5-year-old son Brian, who is in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center.

"At this point in our investigation, we do not know what caused the operator of the minivan to travel the wrong way," said Michael Realmuto, a captain with the State Police. "We are awaiting autopsy reports and toxicology reports."

"She called her brother because she just wasn't feeling well," added Office James Murphy, who is leading the investigation. "It was obvious that something was wrong because her brother did state he would come get them," he said.

Two miles? Must've been one of those highways with a median that's like, 300 feet wide and filled with trees - and it must've been completely devoid of cars. And I'll also assume that the highway was curved, thus preventing her from seeing a rapidly approaching car.

Otherwise....

How far do you have to go to realize you're going the wrong way on a freeway - don't you notice that the signs aren't pointing the right way?

There have been a few of these in Dallas lately ( North Tollway I think ) - but 4 out of 5 I believe were drunks.

Tisk tisk don't you remember your basic high school physics? Constant velocity motion is relative. Am I going forward or are all those other people in reverse? Who's to say?!?!?

I ask myself this every day....

If you've been on the Taconic, you can understand how someone who is seriously ill could get confused. Diabetic problem? TIA?

I figure she made 33 years old and didn't apply for a Darwin award, so there is probably some mitigating circumstance.

For every billion kilometers driven among 33-year old women, only four fatalities occur, compared to 40 among 20-year old males, reports the Times, highlighting the advantages for women of taking out specialist women's car insurance policies.

Accident data studied by the research team also found that male drivers are at their safest between the ages of 33 and 54, with fewer than eight drivers killed per billion kilometers in this age group.

did you notice that article says "33- year old women"

while it was compared to "20 year old men" and "33-55 year old men"

no shit people in their young age drive faster and more aggressively

And crash more. You forgot that fact.

I missed this by minutes, I was probably passing this point on the Taconic just before 1pm yesterday. You can clearly see both sides of traffic at the point she got on, but ~1 mile down the road the northbound is higher and there are trees in the way.

Northbound exit

She had to be completely out of it to not realize she was driving the wrong way, there were plenty of cars on the road.

sad, but reminds me of this joke:

As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on 280. Please be careful!"

"Hell," said Herman, "It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!"

Yeah, I'm a parent and this is pretty horrible. I particularly feel for her brother - to lose all 3 of his young daughters like that is just beyond comprehension. You know he has to be second-guessing himself about whether he was forceful enough on the phone with his sister.

In some very sad way it's almost better that the sister didn't make it either, I don't know how she could live with herself after being at the wheel with seven other people dead.

That's the part that amazes me. The children and other adult in the car must have been absolutely terrified; they had to have realized what was going on well before the accident occurred.

The only scenario I can imagine in which they wouldn't freak out is if the driver happened to get on the freeway when there weren't many cars around, and the passengers weren't paying attention until they saw someone coming at them head-on.

ugh, idiot was feeling sick and disoriented yet still kept driving

Gotta be weird for the brother. Not sure what emotions are going through his mind right now. On one hand you want to be angry at the sister for being such an idiot and killing your 3 kids. But on the other hand she also died and lost her child as well.
