How do I obtain a domain thats being squatted?

I just recently decided to setup my last name as a domain name but it is taken by a squatter with just a bunch of ads all of the place. I've done a whois and gone to their parent site and asked to purchase the domain but they do not respond to my emails. is there any way to just force them to transfer the domain to me? It is MY last name after all and they are just using it for advertising. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't think you're going to be able to take a domain away from them just on the basis of your last name.

You are pretty much SOL, you can try calling their host to get some contact info, but other than that there is no way to force someone to give you their domain name.

If there was my last name would be google-yahoo-msn-microsoft-digg-anandtech-newegg just for good measure.

Unfortunately this is accurate.

You could use a domain backordering service like SnapNames.com but that only works if they DO NOT renew the domain.

My not being the only person in the world with my last name is not the issue here.

The issue is that my last name is being used for a domain that is obviously just a parked domain with ads all over the place, and nothing else.

Its being squatted and thats my issue with it. I want it and some idiot in the Cayman Islands is sitting on it doing nothing with it.

I'm not interested in backordering it. Maybe I will offer them money for it and see how much they want.

Good luck, let us know how much they ask for it.

That rug really tied the room together...

Doesn't matter that it's your name. Doesn't matter that they're only using it for ads. Unless your name is trademarked and the trademark is owned by you and you can prove they're trying to take advantage of that trademark, you're pretty much SOL. Think of a different domain name that uses your name. That's what I had to do (in my case, my name was used by business in Spain - .com, .net and .org). I just added an S to the end.

Thanks for the input. I've already had an e in front of my last name for my .com for 8+ years now. Im just looking for some input on how to acquire my actual last name for my domain. Thanks anyways.

You have no idea if they are using that name for other services. You don't have to have a website.

The fact that it's your name doesn't mean didley squat. The fact that they just have adds and nothing else on the page doesn't mean squat, you have no more right to that page then they do, and they can do whatever they want with it. Also, there might not be a lot web pages (other than adds), but how do you know it's not being used as an FTP server, game server of some kind etc? Could be any services... though that's not very likely.

Anyhow, you can offer them money for it, but unless they want to sell it to you, you don't have any claim to that domain.

first initial + last name ?

first name + last name ?

first name + middle name + last name ?

.net
.name

etc.

I couldn't get squisher.com so I got squisher.net

I couldn't get my last name either so I went with my first initial and my last name .com

i tried to get a domain of my lastname. nope no getting it. just because its is your name does not mean anything.

I was fortunate to get my last name with the .net extension when it was still available several years ago. Sorry, but unless they decide to sell it to you, there's no way in hell you'll be able to force the issue. And if they do sell, you can bet it will be for a lot more than it's worth.

I disagree. I think "Assman" would be a pretty valuable domain name...

What if the guy that owns it has the same last name as you?

You have 2 and only 2 options:

1. Buy it from owner.
2. Backorder it and wait it out, hoping he doesn't have autorenew on.
