I've just gotten both an ePod and a Palm IIIxe today. I was hoping to be able to use IrDA TX/RX functions on my desktop. My mobo, an Abit KT7, has IrDA headers. I'd like to know the how, the where, and the what. Thanks.

joshdoe...

there have been others before you who have posted questions on this topic, without much, if any, success. Myself included. The huge problem is that it's next to impossible to find the IR adapter to plug into your MB IrDA header... it baffles me that most mobo manufacturers continue to include the header yet are completely worthless when it comes to providing the adapter to hook up to it.

Assuming you are able to find the adapter, all you have to do is plug it into the header and enable IrDA in your BIOS. The next time you boot into Windows it should detect your IrDA port and install the driver. There will be an infrared control panel and tray icon to monitor any connections.

It's real simple after you find the adapter, but finding the adapter is the hard part by far. I would suggest trying to talk to Abit, although you probably won't have much success... Abit is worthless when it comes to this stuff.

If you do have some luck with Abit, pls let the rest of us know. There are more than a few of us who wish to enable this feature.

Good luck in your quest.

josh, I've asked this question twice...in here and in Off Topic, it doesn't seem like anyone uses it at all. Let us all know if you do figure it out, especially cuz you have an Abit board, cuz I do too.

late.

I have followed up such topics more than once with the same info: Asus IRM-100, which I got at egghead for $15 and popped into my BH6. However while I could install it and the drivers and get some response out of it while using a universal remote control and software I could never get it to work correctly -that is it would not read the signals consistently so was impossible to program for more than one key. The problem was not with the RC software, IRAssistant which seemed excellent because I tried others as well as this IRA port snooper receiver proggy wot I forget the name of right now.

Well I have the act-210l and it used to work fine under win95. Now that I moved on to win98SE, I can't seem to make it work. I've emailed them and hope of getting it to work soon.

Btw It has a 1.5 meter cord so it can sit on top of the screen and sync my palm easily.:)

Assuming the Asus IRM-100 can be obtained, anybody found a good wireless keyboard with a pointing device built in?

I did pay 35$ for it (should be 25$+shipping). But you can build one and get it cheaper.
I can open my ir transiver and tell you how to build one.
Is anyone interested?

I have an IR header on my mobo and a IR window on the front of my case. The Asus IRM-100 looks promising, but I can't seem to find a US vendor who has it.

This page has some info on it.

If anyone finds a vendor, please let me know.

HI,

I recently installed one on an Asus A7V motherboard. I think it is the ASUS IR device. I'm using it with the Palm Vx and it's working just fine.

One really big thing to watch out for. Make sure that you have a place to install it (a case window) and that it's at a reasonable place to line up with your portable IR Device.

Personally, I put a 1/2" hole in a 5.25" drive bay cover and mounted the IR module on standoffs that that I made. (no previous built-in on the case).

The way that the module is made is not really great. Everything is on the same side of the board, which forces you to end up with a fair standoff from the case. I find that I have to be really careful with lining up my Palm to get good reception. I'm thinking about adding some sort of a reflector shield (like a flash light would have) to see if that helps.

Anybody have another idea to help?

I also have a clear plastic screen over it, yet IR devices always seem to have a really deep red/purple/blue screen. Does this help in some way?

Thanks.

PS. I bought my module for $30Cdn (about $20US) from a local store in Ottawa, ON.

I just spent about an hour searching for the Asus IRM-100 on the web. I only found it in one place, for $15 one place but the page looks really crusty (dated 1999). It seems most of the IRdA sites are dated 1999. Does anyone know where I can but one of these modules for < $20 on the web?

I found another type which attaches to the slot on the back of your system but this is not what I want being I have an IR window on my case.

Blah, I found a vendor who carries it. It's $23.99 + 10.00 shipping. Too rich for my blood. If anyone wants one they have 2 in stock.

I am going to keep looking. I only want to spend $15.00 on it plus shipping.

BTW: Did any of you guys call a PriceKiller looking for this unit yesterday? The salesperson said someone called yesterday looking for one and found it strange being noone ever calls about them anymore.
