How do I clean install Win on a slave HDD?

I have recently added a larger & faster HDD (IBM ATA 100).
I would like to do a clean install of windows and the programs on the new HDD while continuing to use the old HDD until I have reinstalled everything to the new HDD.
I have so far placed the new HDD as a slave to the old HDD, reformatted & partitioned the new HDD.

My questions:

1-How do I do a clean install of the OS ( WIN ) on the new HDD while booting to the old HDD?

2-How do I then load my programs to the new HDD after a clean install of Win on the new HDD?

3-When the new HDD is setup like I want it, can I then change the jumpers to make the new HDD the master, & the old HDD the slave, and have everything run properly?

4-And if so, once I am satisfied that the new HDD runs properly, how do I then reformat the old HDD?

Thanks for the anticipated help.

really the only way to do this is leave ur box open put the new hdd as master and the other as slave then install the OS then install your programs if you want to go back to the other hdd and boot off of that you will have to switch the jumpers around for slave/master
or u could set one drive as master/slave and the other to cable select then all you have to do is change the one jumper to switch between the drives

I know for some mobo when you disable the master driver in bios, it will boot from the slave drive. You may want to try that.

However, I don't think there is any way you can boot from the old drive and install OS on the new drive (which is slave).

What I would suggest is this. Switch them, so the new hdd is master and the old one is slave. Then boot from the master (using a boot disk or so), install the OS, and install whatever applications you want. At the same time, the old hdd is working, you don' thave to delete anything or format it, and you can retrieve whatever data you want from it and put them in the new hdd.

After you are all done, which means you can boot from your hdd to the OS, and everything is set, you can just go ahead and format the old hdd. It is already slave, so just format it and you will be fine.

Thanks.
If I switch the new HDD to master & the old HDD to slave, do a clean instal of Win to the new HDD, then can I still run the programs on the old HDD until I am finished on the new HDD?
My problem:
I have a lot on the old HDD, including my cable modem setup which is my internet access. I also have my kids computer on a network, & my old HDD is the server for their internet access. The cable & network are a pain for me to set up, so I would like to work this out over a leisurely pace. Fortunately I have all the updates, patches, etc saved for most of the programs.
Thanks again!

I hope this may help:

Also, search for threads on this - I know I've read aboutt this very recently here - but I'm afraid to give advic, at least on this.

Myself, I did this easily when I got a Western Digital HDD and it came with a utility called Data Life Guard that makes this kind of stuff easy. It can be used if one of your drives is a WDigital. The program is available for download at their site.

If you want a clean install, there is really no way to make the re-setup of your internet and applications easy. If you don't want to mess with all this stuff, I would recommend just mirroring your old HD to the new one. You can do this with some third party apps like ghost or western digital tools, but personally, I prefer to use the xcopy command in dos and then fdisk to set the new drive active. If you don't already know how to do most of this stuff, all I can say is be careful :)

For simplicity, Norton Ghost is a great tool. I know Maxtors come with software for drive mirroring (I think) but not sure about IBM.

Thanks. A few annoying problems have been popping up lately in the old hard drive. I have not been able to correct these problems. I have decided to "bite the bullet" and work from a clean OS install. Now it looks like I got to go thru the pain of the IRQ's, updates of the programs, cable modem setup, & network setup. The computer serves as a server in my home for cable Internet access.
My system:
PIII 600MHz->800MHz
Asus P3B-F
Mushkin 128 MB PC133
IBM 10.2 GB HDD (old)
IBM 15 GB HDD ata 100 7200 RPM
PlexWriter 12\4\32 CD-RW SCSI
Pioneer 10x DVD-ROM
Seagate STT 8000 Tape Backup
Cable Modem IDE one way
3COM 56K Sportser Modem
Matrox G400 video
Creative Labs Soundblaster Live!
HP 970 Deskjet on USB LPT1 disabled
PDA to USB converter for Palm V to use USB
Serial port 1 for digital camera
Serial port 2 disabled
Nomad II is on the serial port of the network Kid's computer, but uses the cable for MP3 files.
That's why I wanted to work at a "leisurely pace" while reinstalling the system on the new HDD and continue to use the old HDD until done.
