There are a lot of smart people on ATOT, but business knowledge is not one of this forum's strong points.

"For a short period in 2000, Ellison was the richest man in the world."

He's an interesting person - never met him, but when I lived in the bay area from 95-2000, anytime his name would appear in the news - it was always something childish [he whined and complained that he couldn't fly out of San Jose Airport anytime he wanted to due to noise restrictions].

I'd say he's in the same group as those other quirky Silicon Valley Pirates - jobs, gates, etc. :)

There was this funny feature on him years ago where they showed his house. It was like a recreation of a samurai fortress or something. Then they showed him meditating like a samurai to prepare himself for his upcoming battle with Microsoft. I think it was when he was pushing network pcs as a replacement for desktop computers. Quirky is putting it mildly. One day he will try to take over the world, Lex Luthor style.

Ruling from his impenetrable fortress on his private island while stroking his white cat with a furry face that looks like Hitler, Ellison will reveal a hidden Trojan virus deeply implanted in the code of his software to which he will threaten to activate, thus destroying all businesses of the world from the inside out and implode the world economy. Holding the worlds economy hostage when it is at it's weakest, all of Earths leaders will cave in to his demands, lest a global depression worse than what was experienced in the 30's will consume the world.

Are you associating corporate conspiracies with Hitler? Everyone knows that Hitler was a socialist and would have nothing to do with such things.

Obviously you know nothing about Super Villains and their tendency to stroke their cats while twirling their mustaches. Petting a cat that looks like Hitler is only taking it a step further.

If you license some software that runs on Oracle... say, Peoplesoft, when your first quarterly maintenance fee bill comes in you will understand how Larry got so rich.

I saw Ellison at JavaOne (Oracle World). That dudes egos makes Donald Trump look classy. Ellison is the kind of person I'd pay to punch square in the face.

Hes not turning it private. The resorts will stay open. The golf courses will stay open. They are all on long term and/or 99 year leases. The question is, will he allow more things to be built to attract more tourism? Will he help improve the islands economy? The previous owner lost $40million a year. I doubt Ellison has plans on doing that.
Why would he care if someone else's business, on land leased from him, makes money?

Do you think he does a cost/benefit analysis for his yacht, jet, or mansion? Hell no. He's not buying the island as an investment, he's buying it because he wants to.

not sure if serious

or trolling

or really stupid

Might depend on your local market. Here in Seattle everyone is running SQL, except the old and/or super large corporations (Boeing, Tmobile, etc)

I'm a tech recruiter here and can't really do much for Oracle folks.. SQL folks get jobs in a week

oh... so you mean SQL Server, not SQL

just about every DB uses SQL, you cant call SQL Server SQL and except anyone to know what you are talking about

unless maybe you are in one of those terrible MSFT-only cities

Holy cow, he bought Lanai. Right by Maui, there's even a Four Seasons on that island. That's a huge purchase. I'm surprised it was as cheap as it was. Definitely one of the if not THE most exclusive Hawaiian Island.

The man has very good taste.
