I happen to have met the NewEgg founders a couple times and this is something we talk about often.

NewEgg actually started as a spin off of ABS computers. ABS has been around a "long time" as they started building systems in the early nineties i believe. ABS did so well because they were able to continually use their purchasing power to leverage bulk quanity deals. I like to think of them as the first true Distributor-Reseller. Up until about a year ago most of the big distributors (Ingram, Synnex, D&H, Ma Labs) did not sell to customers directly.

So anyways, ABS was getting all these great bulk item deals for its system components. NewEgg and eventually NuTrend were part of ABS's plan to push items directly to consumers. Since ABS was already around for some 8 (i think) years before NewEgg was started, the owners used the ABS name for buying power/leverage. Sometimes, its not what you know, its who you know. :)

In any case, from what I know about the owners; they are very levelheaded even considering how cuthroat this industry is.

Cheers,

Kristopher

Hmm.. I always used to think Newegg was some dotcom that became really lucky. Guess I was wrong, it had corporate backing and experience.

I wonder if ABS is a publicly traded company.

This is true. In a past life I had a meeting with Inwin, (we were evaluating their product) and she mentioned this relationship. ABS does get a little heat occasionally from manufacturers for dumping system-builder-only hardware through Newegg (Bought through ABS using their purchasing leverage). I will say they are the best-run computer hardware distributor ever.

I think AT really helped. almost EVERYONE on AT says to go to Newegg.

Make sure Anand gets his cut. I am sure he could use it to buy his wife a big 'ol rock :)

Newegg created a reputation for shipping what you ordered promptly and in good condition at a goo dprice. no scams, no shadiness and having to deal with reputability.

Their shipping prices are good and none of that shady $15 to ship a CPU or stick of memory. They have excellent customer service especially when you have to exchange or return defective items. I especially like their refurb section. I like to gamble once in a while I guess :)

Another thing that I really appreciate about their site is that they do not make their products sound like the biggest breakthrough in the world. They list the specs and the things you need to know about it, and that's it.

I agree with one of the first opinions. At first the NewEgg web site looked like a rip-off of the mwave.com website. However they kept improving their website (and mwave hasn't...)

The things I like about NewEgg over other sites (not in any order):

* Pictures and detailed specs on all products.
* Fast shipping
* You can pull up any previous order, at least over the last 3 years. This is useful,
as most of my purchases are for business
* Product reviews
* The wish list - I save my most common systems in the wish list, making future
orders very quick.

I would like to see some improvements in the wish list feature, but otherwise NewEgg is by far the best web site I've come across for computer parts. I do wish that they would have "Motherboard+cpu" combos...

There shipping isn't quite as good as it use to be. It takes them a day or two to get everything cleared and package before they ship anymore unless you pay that priority shipment thing. I orded stuff on Fri 3am(Thrusday night) from both newegg and mwave. Mwave shipped on Fri and Newegg shipped on Monday. I know the last couple things I have ordered from them has went that way. Doesn't really bother me though.

Order.
Gets here fast.
Good prices.
Oh sh!t! I need to RMA.
Wow, that was painless.
New part back already? Cool.

Rinse, repeat and tell friends.

Then they get the nice search thing going...great, you can find parts even faster.

Unedited, maybe, but I've noticed several of mine have had the rating factored in, but no review posted.

What do you buy? I've NEVER had it take even a full 24 hours (not counting weekends and holidays) for an order to ship.

I'd have to disagree about their RMA policy being the best under the sun. Especially when it comes to defective items.

i've heard of people having "problems" with them, but usually it turns out to be some little thing that got resolved eventually. personally, i've spent around $10,000 there and have received nothing but great delivery times and good service when i needed to RMA or return things. i'm sure no company is perfect and i have no loyalty to them, but for now, they are the only place i shop for computer parts.

Back in November it was a Video card. This time it was a video card, sound card, and heatsink. They have an option now were you pay I think $2.99 and they will "try" to ship it the sameday. Like I said I really don't care. I would rather wait an extra day and order from a place I trust.

the problems i've heard are from people that buy new mobos but it came like it was refurbished (opened, fingerprints, etc.). but then some others ordered refurbished but came like it was brand new unopened.
