How did Newegg got to be where it is?

How did Newegg become so well known and reputable? What did they do that other computer parts retailers didn't, which gave them an edge over the others?

Maybe I am a little biased to think that Newegg is very well known.

Definitely.

There were always plenty of places selling parts for cheap costs online, but there were also PLENTY of horror stories that went with many (if not most) of those places. NewEgg stood behind its products with competitive prices, fast (and cheap) shipping, and great customer service on returns. Couple that with a good web site that allows customers to give feedback on parts and it's a solid recipe for success.

First they copied mwave's site, a very reputalbe etailer at the time (and still is).

Then they offered excellent customer service.

Then they never stopped improving the functionality of their site.

voila.

I heard Newegg was started with a very large investment which allowed them to sell products for a loss or at cost until they could reach the volume needed to undercut everyone else. That, and customer service.

Yeah, Mwave was the company I usually turned to before NewEgg. They had good customer service too IMO. I haven't used them in awhile, but then again I haven't really tinkered with my hardware as much the last couple years.

They did well with customer service while keeping prices competitive... and word gets out on the Internet... somehow. ;)

Good question Tommy. I do about 96% of my computer peripherals shopping there. I must have heard about them through all of the raves in tech forums. I don't remember anymore.

I'm going to have to agree with that.

Customer service is key. Not just in the beginning, but even later on when they become a large company. I have been shopping there for quite some time now and have influenced entire computer purchases from there as well. Why? Because of their service. I don't mind spending a few extra bucks to get it from them, because through them I can expect good customer service.

good word of mouth
word of mouth is the best advertisement you can get.
thats where i learned about them on tech forums
everyone seemed to be raving about newegg so i checked them out.
been a customer ever since.
if i ordered something today, i would get it on wednesday.
i somehow get items in 2 days from them, without fail. for the standard fedex shipping.

That's been my experience too. The time between ordering and shipping is very small, as compared to some other places which take days.

VERY functional website. they are the only one that you could separate it for chipsets, ram amount, type, etc... most other sellers only give you small options like, amd or intel, thats it. or 128mb, 256mb, 64mb, video card, THATS IT, cant search based on chipset. or search based on manufacters adn TAHTS IT, can't search on other criteria.

Hi everyone,

I happen to have met the NewEgg founders a couple times and this is something we talk about often.

NewEgg actually started as a spin off of ABS computers. ABS has been around a "long time" as they started building systems in the early nineties i believe. ABS did so well because they were able to continually use their purchasing power to leverage bulk quanity deals. I like to think of them as the first true Distributor-Reseller. Up until about a year ago most of the big distributors (Ingram, Synnex, D&H, Ma Labs) did not sell to customers directly.

So anyways, ABS was getting all these great bulk item deals for its system components. NewEgg and eventually NuTrend were part of ABS's plan to push items directly to consumers. Since ABS was already around for some 8 (i think) years before NewEgg was started, the owners used the ABS name for buying power/leverage. Sometimes, its not what you know, its who you know. :)

In any case, from what I know about the owners; they are very levelheaded even considering how cuthroat this industry is.

Cheers,

Kristopher

I think I've ordered something like over $2000 from them and plan on ordering more.

They are fast, their website is nice, and they offer damn near every computer part I want.

Plus the free cap/shirt/pen and all sorts of other stuff is a nice perk too.
