How did military ranks get their name, and rankings?

I did a search under "military" and didnt find anything.

so how did lutenant general be ranked higher than major general? etc

I've always wondered about the military rankings. I hope someone answers your question.

I'm not sure how it all started but... I'm pretty sure that this wasn't meant to be placed in "Hot Deals" :D
