RUN!!!!!

Or maybe not.. at least she told you about it. My next door neighbor has it (she told my wife) and she still hasn't told her boyfriend.

What kind of herpes? HSV-2 you get from sexual contact. Practically everyone has HSV-1, CMV, and VZV (chicken pox).

Jimmy hat, lol never heard it called that before. Yes, I would like to second the idea that you should run, or at least not engage in any "risky" behavior until she has been tested...

If it is on her mouth, stay away as soon as she notices anything. Do not use her straws, glasses, silverware, etc. Kissing is out of the question as well, of course. After the sore is dried out, it is ok again.

MD's say that it is possible to get it even when there is no sore present. I dated a woman with the mouth type and I never had a problem because I knew how to avoid it.

Herpes is very contagious when it is active.

i'm not going to let some viral infection ruin our relationship.

Yes...and I hate to say it but a rubber will NOT help, unless it covers your entire pubic area.

Maybe you should keep a pic of her when she DOES have a breakout, just to remind you what you may be in for.

It may ruin many many relationships you have in the future...please remember that the next time you want to get intimate with her.

I hate to be such a drag...but at one time I went out with someone who had herpes...and I was so glad that she told me before we became intimate...when I saw her during a breakout I got physically ill. Another thing you have to know...the degree of her breakouts have NO relationship to how bad YOURS can be, once you are infected. If she has been infected for a while, they are going to be less unsightly than yours will be.

Sometimes it is better to just be friends...especially at this stage of your life.

I am not clear whether you are talking about oral herpes (i.e., cold sores) or genital herpes. You CAN get genital herpes if someone with a cold sore goes south of the border on you, but this is not contagious unless she has a breakout. A very large percentage of people have cold sores, and this is nothing to be afraid of.

For that matter, something like 20-25% of adults in America have genital herpes, so most of the adults on this board have had sex with someone that has it (I have had two long-term GFs with genital herpes and do not have it myself) - all that is needed is some care and common sense.

Cold sores are a type of herpes (1 I think) and it is just as contagious as type 2 (genital). If you get the virus on your skin ANYWHERE you can get it. We wrap patients that have active outbreaks (pretty nasty sometimes) because it is so contagious.
